1 Loan, 2 snubs, 3 take it or leave it offers and an early night for Tottenham on deadline day.

Not the typical final day of a transfer window for Tottenham, just when Daniel Levy and his top buyer Franco Baldini would normally be operating at optimum power it seems that a half days holiday was called in North London. The cameras and media were where the action normally takes place as they gathered at Tottenham HQ to see players arrive for their medicals before there unveiling, even though Tim Sherwood had given them the thumbs up and said that he had told Levy no players were needed they waited believing that to be a red herring, the cameras continued to roll and the Sky reporter was not even put off when they locked the gates and left!

Throughout the day as in the week before all the talk was of sales and new aquisitions, the battles with Arsenal, Liverpool and United over players that they want ed irrespective of whether they needed them, the need of yet another winger/midfielder Nani led to speculation that Tottenham would release a shining star with huge potential for an underachieving United star earning three times as much and who would be demanding four times as much, great business if you can do it!

Berbatov who early in the day was desperate to join Tottenham suddenly decided he wasn’t so desperate and was one of those to snub them though probably not for Monaco the club but more likely Monaco the tax haven. Next the Ukraine wide man was the snubber who preferred Liverpool rather than the challenge of ¬†Townsend, Lennon, Chadli, Sigurdsson and Lamela who are all similarly trying for a spot out wide for Tottenham, as it turned out he really didn’t fancy Liverpool either or wasn’t actually for sale.

Strange as it might seem after several final offers, almost on a daily basis, from Napoli for Etienne Capoue there was no final mention of that deal actually taking place, strange when you consider that two thirds of Tottenham’s current coaching staff has no time for defensive midfielders, yet Capoue and Sandro are two of the best, while Jake Livermore on loan at Hull is also a full England international in that very position.

Come the end or this months transfer window we had sold Jermain Defoe and decided not to replace him, loaned Lewis Holtby to Fulham the player who is the most natural alternative to Eriksen if he should become injured or need rest and yet again failed to find or even look for a solution to the left back issue.

So there it is a month in which a striker was needed for Defoe when he departs or for when Adebayor might again go on the turn or goes missing, a left back just in case Danny Rose picks up an injury or sees red for a good tackle perhaps. Not once were we linked to a defender, not once were we linked to a real striker and not once were we remotely excited by the prospect of a new addition to the squad, not once did we see Sherwood arrive in his car and give us an interview from the window, I miss ‘Arry.

  1. Jide says:

Sherwood laid his own bed, let him lie on it. For his own sake let’s hope it’s not full of thorns!

His view that no player was needed made no sense. It will only take one or two injuries in crucial positions where we lack cover for him to realise his folly.
