3 points at Villa, Spurs opinion the day after.

Posted on October 21, 2013 by Scraggs

Dwight Yorke who looked on through his Aston Villa coloured spectacles tipped Tottenham as potential title winners if they can get into their heads that they are genuine contenders, Hoddle who played and coached at the club enthusing over a good, professional performance and heralding the potential of a player who could eventually render the loss of Gareth Bale as nothing more than a huge payday that enabled the club to purchase the players to take them to a higher level.

My own opinion of yesterday’s game was that it was a reasonably comfortable three points but with a little more aggression and pace injected earlier in the game the result could have been a formality by half time. It was good to see that a number of the players not called upon for international duty took part in the game with starting spots for Lewis Holtby, Roberto Soldado and the other real star of the show Sandro. But for the ever improving form of Townsend it might have also seen the return of Aaron Lennon from the start but nevertheless it was great to see him enter the fray again.

Vlad Chiriches made his premiership debut and was rarely under pressure, he looked comfortable at all times and is clearly a defender who really prefers to get the attack moving forward as quickly as possible, the number of forward passes compared to Michael Dawson reads eighteen to three. Possibly the most telling impact of his inclusion was the switch for Jan Vertonghen to left back, clearly Naughton is not considered to be the answer as the replacement for Rose and Fryers is obviously not yet ready. Another left back in January seems a certainty provided the right man can be found.

Soldado was a class act on the day and his goal really summed up what a fantastic striker he is, while Paulinho is everything we hoped for and more. If I have any reservations about the performance it is that up until the first goal the team were very slow to get at the Villa defense seeming to prefer to knock the ball about at the back for an age, with the pace and ability in the team it seemed that they were reluctant to get players forward quickly and is probably the reason why the goals for column is not ticking along as it should be.

A comfortable three points was the order of the day and was achieved, solid performances all over the pitch and most of those that were on international duty rested for the games coming up. AVB’s Tottenham is still a work in progress but remain fifth in the table just three points behind the the league leaders. Hopefully the group will soon find their very best form, with the likelihood that the entire squad will be involved in training this week with Capoue, Kaboul and Rose apparently almost fit and ready to rejoin the group.

Have Tottenham really hit the highs of last season yet? probably not but then they didn’t until December last year, they do though have a far better defensive record than they did at the same time last year, irrespective of the strange West Ham result, once their attacking play starts to produce the goals that it deserves then things should improve still further.

Replace defoe with chicharito n get a lb in jan.I’d say we can then push for the title

  2. muham says:

Cant afford any mistakes like the west ham game anymore well write it off as a freak mistake but how many title winning teams will lose 3-0 at home to an average west ham team. More positive news good win yesterday considering villa have beat arsenal an city this year

Somebody has to win the title and all the contenders have had poor results,Arsenal/villa, City/Villa and Cardiff, Chelsea/everton and Spurs/w.ham as far as United are concerned they ahve only had the one decent performance and Swansea were the unlucky team to face them on the one occasion they put in a a performance. spurs have to learn how to break down defensive teams like the hammers and perhaps that is why they tried to draw villa out knocking the ball about at the back. I suppose the reality is that chelsea haven’t lost to a lowly placed team with everton being a good side but they have struggled for most wins. Nothing to concern us in relation to a challenge as yet, most would consider City to be best bet but they have a couple of bad losses already, next week they face chelsea so something has to give or a draw, either way it should suit us.

I didn’t see it as quite as comfortable as the poster. For quite some time in the first half I thought this could go either way – perhaps a direct result of having watched the WH mess a few weeks prior.

It was a lucky first goal for Townsend., and while for his performance perhaps he did deserve it, but we must admit it was a huge chunk of luck.

As was mentioned many times in commentary, AV are a counter-attacking side., so maybe this forced a more cautious Spurs.

The second goal was really fantastic and I’m delighted Soldado has his first from open play. May he start to find many many more now he’s on his way.

Townsend was unlucky shooting a curling shot just over late in the second half.

For me the game never looked comfortable until the second goal – but it was a decent performance where I think more than ever, the tactics was ultimately the deciding factor.

i know what you mean but Lloris was rarely troubled, the goal was a little fortunate but then so were the first 2 goals w.ham scored against us. 1st half hour was bit drab and i was shouting for quicker attacks, perhaps that is the way AVB has decided to play against teams that park the bus especially on their own patch, knock it about and draw them out, it’s not exciting but it might have to be the answer for a while until the teamplay really starts to flow. Spurs will have every player back in training sometime this week, just think of the players missing from yesterdays lineup and it is not difficult to see just why there is a good chance of some success this season.

  4. Eric says:

U 2 are right but keep in mind Man u still got wins whilst playing poor n that’s how u win titles.I still believe we r only around 45% n when lamela chadli soldado eriksen gel in completely it will be fun to watch

  5. Jide says:

I just hope we leave our first team players at home for the Europa league on Thursday. We. Have more than enough squad players in my view. We cannot afford another result like the West Ham match. Freak result or not. Three points against Hull is a must on Sunday.
