7 go for Champions League-Spurs and Newcastle set to cause upsets.

Posted on July 09, 2012 by Tony

Realistically there are now 7 clubs  challenging for a spot in the Champions League which means thar there will be 3 very disappointed sets of players and supporters come the end of the season.

The seven clubs are made up of the original Sky 4  Manchester United,Chelsea,Arsenal and Liverpool add to this Manchester City and the bankroll which has put them at the pinnacle of English clubs for the moment,  Spurs having proven over the last few seasons to be consistent performers achieving 4th place on two occasions now.The seventh club now ready and able to challenge is Newcastle, finishing 5th last season and going nip and tuck with Spurs and Arsenal for that coveted 4th place (well it was meant to be but for Chelsea winning it)for most of the season.

Everton would have been the 8th challenger but for the lack of investment in players, but as always David Moyes will have a good strong team ready to cause plenty of upsets.

Assessing each club in alphabetical order lets see what the coming season might bring for each club:-

Arsenal-    At the moment having to cope with the likelihood of losing their key man and scorer of a large percentage of their goals last season Van Persie. This was always on the cards and expected so much so that they had already purchased Podolski and Giroud, they purchased Gervinho and Oxlade- Chamberlain last year so are still well represented up front.Still to be decided is the future of Walcott also having just 1 year left on his contract.

More worrying perhaps is the news that Wilshere might not be fit for some time yet and midfield is possibly an area of concern if they pick up any more injuries,Arteta will be key for a while but he seems to have more than his fair share of injuries.

Chelsea-     Stunned by the fact that they could only finish 6th and only retained a Champions League spot by winning it against all the odds. They have started to go on a spending spree to address the situation having already bought Hazard and Marin, they will certainly buy more yet.

The worry for them is that they have lost their main man Drogba and as things stand the goalscoring duties rest with Torres. The issues of an ageing team has been addressed in part but still some key players Terry,Cole and Lampard are getting no younger but much slower, maybe more problems defensively and on the goalscoring front.Di Matteo has been lucky for them that is for sure but his actual points won ratio was worse than AVB.

Liverpool-    The newly appointed Brendan Rogers will have them playing the right way but their squad will need improving for him to get the best out of them. Some of the players that they have come to rely on are much older now and pick up injuries more regularly, also many of his predecessors purchase were not really of the required standard

.The other worry initially is Rogers actually understanding the enormity of Liverpool as against Swansea,he tried to get Sigurdsson on the cheap and that’s not the Liverpool way,if they want a player and are convinced he will make a difference then they get him, they do not lose transfer battles to Spurs generally, or rarely have done for 30yrs or more.

Work to do and possibly a year to soon.

Manchester City-     Current League Champions and likely to buy big again to strenghthen the side for the coming season, the problem that they have is that they do not appear to be a happy squad or team more a collection of expensive highly paid professionals with huge egos thrown together.Problems are never far away, think Tevez,Balotelli and Adebayor and more problems will occur.

Mancini, whatever you might think of him has done remarkably well to achieve any sort of success but bearing in mind the money spent and the players that they have the league was only won with the last kick of the last game of the season and Europe was quite frankly a disaster.

Not really quite sure who they could buy to make a huge difference,Van Persie is the obvious choice but would he offer more than Tevez , Aguero or Balotelli .

Manchester United-    Last season was not one of their finest, nor in fact the one before that but they almost got the job done and probably should have.

Key players remained Giggs , Scholes and Ferdinand but for how much longer.Fergie bought youth last year and after a promising start many tailed away. Not much on the transfer front at the moment which is a little surprising as United usually get their business done early.

United are not the pull that they used to be having been overtaken by the money on offer at City and Chelsea,it has also been a good while since they were last really feared in Europe.

If teams lose their fear of United in the domestic league then they might just be in trouble.

Newcastle United-     A fantastic season last year always in the reckoning for top 4 and causing plenty of upsets along the way. They have a first choice eleven capable of beating anyone, they do have a problem as their squad lacks depth.

They have a good manager in Pardew who will look to add to the squad and he has been proven to have an eye for good players and a bargain, the main problem that Newcastle will face will be if some of the bigger clubs start trying to cherry pick their players.

Tottenham Hotspur-    Tentatively established as a top 4/5 team they are attempting to step up to the next level, they have appointed a new young coach in Villas-Boas and have acquired 2 great additions to the squad in positions identified as requiring improvement.

As in the case of Newcastle,Tottenham are not yet in a position to match the others in terms of wages and so again some of their key players are in demand and attracting big money in terms of contracts.Fortunately Gareth Bale has committed himself toTottenham for the time being and that bodes well for the anticipated intentions of the club.

Much will depend on the success of the club in the transfer market, both in and out.

An interesting season lies in front of us all and there will likely be a surprise or two at the end of it.
