90 minutes of Football Heaven at Tottenham

Posted on August 25, 2014 by Scraggs

We travelled to White Hart Lane yesterday knowing that a win by four clear goals would take us to the top of the league but we didn’t really believe it was possible. What followed was a performance from this Tottenham team that we didn’t dare dream was possible. We have seen some decent performances, thirty minutes or a half of fantastic football, while Tim Sherwood was in charge too many occasions when fight backs brought about good results and far, far too many occasions when we have spoken of a game of two halves.Yesterday we witnessed a totally different sort of performance as Tottenham proved that they are capable of totally dominating another premiership team for the entirety of the game, the workrate and effort was maintained for 90 minutes and though they only managed to score the once in the second half they created plenty of chances.

It is rare to witness a team performance when every player performs so well, every player and substitute did their job, passing and movement was exceptional, every player was willing to put their foot in and do the dirty work for the benefit of the team, 90% of almost 700 passes reached their mark, they scored a goal of such quality that they looked after the ball for almost two and a half minutes, made 48 passes involving all eleven players and it ended with a devastating run and cross from Lamela to the head of Chadli to despatch with ease.(Follow this link to watch it again and again)

It is too soon into the era of Mauricio Pochettino to know what level he is capable of achieving with Tottenham and these players, not all them are at the same fitness levels because of the World Cup, the club’s transfer business is not yet finished and right now it is doubtful even he knows his best team.

A little over a week ago and before the season got underway JTN published an article from one of our guest writers regarding the position of the top seven squads going into the new season, with two games down and just a week left of this transfer window that assessment is beginning to look pretty accurate. Of course things can change, United for instance having already spent £60m look like spending another £100m or more such is their inadequacy.

Leading up to yesterdays game many Tottenham supporters were still critical of Tottenham, Levy, some players and the ability of the team, at JTN we found ourselves defending our club on social media sites, after that performance and leading the division opinions might have changed a little, Danny Rose is beginning to look the real deal, Jan Vertonghen seems to have rediscovered his appetite, Eric Dier is looking to be an inspired signing, Kaboul seems to have put injury concerns behind him, Eriksen is carrying his form into the new season and Erik Lamela is beginning to look like a record signing.

No Tottenham supporter in their right mind will be thinking we can win the league, but will settle for thinking that we are capable of mounting a serious challenge for a place in the top four. Yesterday was a good day to be a Spurs supporter and even Daniel Levy joined in and showed us a different side of his character by getting soaked by the team, the news that he was responsible for convincing Lloris to sign a new contract was also telling with the word “ambition” featuring.

Really pleased about yesterday. I know QPR were poor, but I liked our attitude and hard work. Pleased for many of the players who got a lot of unfair stick last season and well done Ponch. Early days and I’m not getting carried away, but I see signs of progress and that’s as much as you can ask for

    • tom says:

Brilliant performance that probably made QPR look worse than they actually were.
I’m happy to accept at this stage that we are real contenders for top four, that’s not too much to expect as that is what the squad was built for.

I think our performance made them look worse than they really are, am excited at what i’ve seen so far.
