A fond farewell to Jermaine Defoe.

Posted on February 28, 2014 by Eddie S

JD remained at Tottenham beyond the end of the transfer season after signing for Toronto in the MLS on a loan but apart from a very brief substitute appearance he was unable to take his place in the team for his final farewell due to a slight injury. So after ten years and two spells with the club Defoe has finally left and he leaves with a place in the Tottenham record books as their leading goalscorer in Europe. After 363 appearances for us in all competitions and 143 goals there can be little doubt that he will be fondly remembered.

In an era when the fashion has switched to playing one striker up front rather than the “little and large” strikeforce of some years back Defoe has had to change his game so as to compete for a place in the team, reports of extra work during the summer rest period are testament to his willingness to improve for the good of the club and himself  and he has earned his reputation as a true professional.defoe leaving

JD leaves with plenty of  good years left in the tank and we know he will succeed, the MLS will be surprised to have gotten another splendid professional from Tottenham and one that guarantees goals. He follows in the footsteps of Robbie Keane and Clint Dempsey who have both been sold by Tottenham to clubs in the MLS and all have had and will continue to have major influence on the game across the pond.

How we best rembember JD.

How we best rembember JD.

Here is a short video which sums up just what Jermain Defoe has provided us with for many years and though there were times when he could infuriate when perhaps taking the wrong option his dedication to scoring goals will never be tarnished. JD leaves with our sincere thanks and good wishes, It will be sometime  before we see another quite like him who we must remember is one of only four players ever to have scored FIVE goals in a single Premier League fixture, Alan Shearer, Andy Cole and Dimitar Berbatov are the others so he joins a very small elite group. One of his other claims to fame is the second fastest Premier League hat-trick in only seven minutes in that same game against Wigan.

Jermain Defoe remembered the fans fondly when saying his goodbyes at half-time last night and he will always be remembered by the Tottenham fans as one of their own. Like other heroes he will always be welcomed back to White Hart Lane.

He could be annoying and then lift you with an amazing goal. cannot think of another like him and still feel we should have retained him as a squad player.
