A new day brings greater expectation for Tottenham.

After what can only be described as a bit of a shock following yesterdays announcement that David Villa was joining Atletico Madrid for little more than a half dozen donkeys and a herd of goats, today the expectation of most Tottenham supporters has grown still more. Having considered all the facts and information fed to us by the press over the past few weeks it seems clear that Villa was not AVB’s must have forward, it is even doubtful now as to whether the player was even considered as a possible addition to the squad.

Late yesterday news started to trickle out that Christian Benteke wants away from Aston Villa, he has not travelled with the squad to Germany on their tour and has done the right thing of handing in a transfer request, just how often does that happen? Clearly he knows that at least one club is willing to do all they can to buy him in this transfer window, Chelsea, Arsenal and Dortmund have all been mentioned but all the odds point to him being a Tottenham player in the very near future.

Assuming Daniel Levy manages to get the deal over the line AVB will have Benteke and Paulinho as impressive additions to his squad but will also be in the fortunate position of welcoming back Younes Kaboul, Sandro, Danny Rose and Andros Townsend, every one of them pacy and powerful, in fact I foresee a team of such speed, ability and graft that expectancy for the coming season is enormous. Imagine Lloris, the obvious first choice keeper behind a back four of Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen and Rose, ahead of them Paulinho, Sandro and Dembele with Bale, Benteke and Lennon further forward. Of that lot only Sandro and Vertonghen would be lacking in blinding pace but they more than make up for that in class and sheer ability.

To back that lot up and to alternate in any given situation will be Friedel, Naughton, Benni, Caulker, Dawson, Holtby, Sigurdsson, Defoe, Dempsey, Townsend and Carroll possibly even Adebayor as well if one of the others is released or loaned, add to that a few of the development and U21 players, now tell me Tottenham lack depth.

I listened to Brazil and Parlour today and neither of them expect Tottenham to finish higher than fifth this coming season, just why I have no idea, the squad has improved simply by having loaned and injured players back and players needed will be purchased, as is the case with Paulinho, the team is young and improving and nobody seems to have grasped the fact that once the squad had learned to cope with the requirements of AVB, e.g. from December onwards, only United won more points than Tottenham.

It seems that pundits cannot see past the usual suspects and many still see Liverpool as a bigger threat than Tottenham, provided Tottenham and AVB gets his man/men then there will be little to choose between four or five teams including Tottenham and the final destination of silverware might ultimately come down to how the season pans out in relation to keeping stars fit.

We keep hearing that the current top four will spend big and make vast improvements to their squad, so far City and Chelsea have spent a significant amount but I wouldn’t necessarily agree that they have improved massively, City have gained a couple of players but lost Tevez and Tottenham might be considered to have purchased the better of the Brazilian midfielders for half the price, Chelsea have bought players but they do not seem to be improvements but rather more of the same. United and Arsenal haven’t bought any significant player as yet.

Provided Tottenham manage to buy that elusive forward, and if it is Benteke, then all of last years top four will need to look to protect their Champions League participation in the future as Tottenham will surely have the squad to challenge for the title itself.

Couldn’t have put it better myself!! Excellent summary of where we’re all at right now. Loving us at 25-1 for the title or 60-1 to finish behind Utd. My bet is the latter. We’ll take it gladly. COYS!!!!!

Need to get on both bets at those odds, I have a feeling that they won’t be that generous for very long.

Whoever they eventually get in up front it seems like it’s going to involve another record fee so it will be top striker. As you say Chavs just more of the same, City rebuilding again, United will only tinker and Arsenal will continue to flatter to deceive, Rooney, Suarez no chance, even Madrid now state no offer from Arsenal for Higuain. Meanwhile Spurs keep rolling along.
