And we’re back. Spurs recovery continues.

There was concern in some quarters when the Tottenham team was announced, No Chiriches, no Vertonghen and no Kaboul, all unfit to play and so Etienne Capoue was drafted in to cover for the three alongside Michael Dawson. Along with the left back problem and Sandro rested for this one many thought AVB had made some decisions that might come back and haunt him again but perhaps we should begin to have more faith in our coach as the team controlled almost every aspect of the game.

It was only an error from Hugo Llloris  that allowed Sunderland to take the lead and the response was immediate as Paulinho at last ended his goal drought, in all honesty he could quite easily have plundered a hat-trick on the day as he remained a constant threat. Holtby, Paulinho and Dembele controlled the game from start to finish while Chadli patrolled ahead of Naughton and again provided the protection needed. On the other flank Lennon and Walker terrorised the Sunderland defence and set up a hatful of chances.

There is no doubt that the referee missed the penalty when Sandro handled but it would in all fairness have been an injustice had Sunderland got back into the game, had this been a boxing match the referee would have stopped it so in control were Tottenham in the second half. Defoe struck the woodwork on two occasions and should have helped himself to another couple when first Holtby and then Paulinho set him free.

At last things are looking better and AVB has made the changes to create the chances to win games, every substitution seems to be coming off and the team spirit is there for all to see as on two occasions in four days the team has fallen behind as a result of defensive error in difficult away fixtures against teams fighting for their survival and on both occasions they have responded.

With every win and with every improved performance AVB’s detractors will be quietened until they wilt away, huge credit is due to the entire group as they begin to find their feet.

Today’s performance was all about the squad and they came through with flying colours.

The comeback continues.

The season restarted here.

    Beware a wounded animal.

  2. BigH says:

Great stuff. My mates were sceptical at the beginning but to be fair I argued AVB had no real choice as injury forced his hand. I am the Beasts greatest fan, but 3 games in a week for someone who has been out a long time is not wise and also we do not need him to pick up a knock with some real battles coming up. Good on AVB keeping the powerful midfield, we need this. Created enough chances to win by 5. Lets keep the momentum going, this will bring confidence. We just need someone to convert those bloody chances. COYS

    • Jo says:

Yeah, but once again, we didn’t, just cannot finish chances.

      • Tony says:

Why the “but” we won both games and have scored 2 goals in each of our last 3 games. chelsea just pipped sunderland on wednesday and city lost to them.

        • Jo says:

We scored one goal against Sunderland, the other was an OG!
Chi riches goal ag.Fulham was a freak shot, only Holtbys was convincing. I know I am negative but I do not see any team goals being scored. Won three games this year on penalties (two dodgy). Our forwards are not scoring, THAT is the concern.

          • Tony says:

Signs today of that changing defoe hit post twice and had 2other great chances. Look at liverpoils goals 2 og and a scrappy first but are they complaining?

  3. grant says:

Now the benefit of a big squad full of quality is there for all to see. Paulinho is getting better and better and he will begin adding to his goal tally. Dembele is really starting to impress and Holtby is now showing what he is all about. When you consider at least half the 1st choice defence was missing injured and then look at the quality on the bench have no fear we are going to be near at the end of the season.

  4. whlspur says:

So AVB only needed three of his seven games and less than a week of the month to save his job. Keep the faith.

    • Jo says:

Remember we played 1. An out of form ManU, and the two teams in the red zone. Not very convincing, lets see how we fare against Suarez and co.

      • Tony says:

see answer above sunderland beat city and only just lost to chelsea. we played an out of form united as an out of form Spurs and were far the better team. sorry but I fail to agree that todays performance was not convincing especially the 2nd half when it could have been a landslide. a win is a win is a win no matter the score.

  5. Jide says:

All I have asked for is to pick up the pace and no brain numbing back and sideway passes, both of those things were there today. Well done AVB. Keep up the good work.

    • grant says:

For 30mins in the 2nd half we were as good as anybody has been all season and could have added a few more goals to total. Chadli is improving but thought Townsend on left added a new dimension. Paulinho,Dembele and Holtby had a spell when sunderland were chasing shadows. we’re getting there.
