Are Tottenham moving toward 3 5 2 formation for when need arises?

Posted on January 22, 2014 by Random Spurs Supporter

Although not suitable for every fixture and against all opposition the introduction of a 3 5 2 formation might just be another option that Tim Sherwood could dabble with in the right circumstances, when he withdrew Aaron Lennon and threw Kyle Walker further forward he gained the knowledge that Walker is another option on that right offering both offensive and defensive capabilities depending upon circumstances and we have seen that he has the engine to do both jobs, once Jan Vertonghen has returned and proved his fitness a defensive three of Vlad Chiriches, Michael Dawson and Vertonghen could offer the defensive security needed especially when Walker is asked to take up a more advanced position on the right.

It is not the first time we at JTN have discussed this possibility as it was a suggested option a few months back when the team were finding it difficult to break down teams who set themselves up to defend in numbers, at the time AVB was in charge and Adebayor was still but a distant memory but now for the moment he is back and impressive. Tim Sherwood has taken some stick on this site and from many 3 5 2Tottenham supporters for sticking rigidly to a 4 4 2 formation and most if not all were pleasantly surprised at the weekend to see him try something different tactically and it work so well.

Now I am in no way suggesting that our next home fixture should see him experiment with such a formation simply because it is probably the best team in the league right now, a team that will attack when the opportunity arises and who will be prepared to come out and consider themselves to be good enough to outscore any opposition, no it’s not for Manchester city but it could very well be useful for when teams arrive at the Lane to defend their goal and leave with what they have or better still nick a goal and the points, Newcastle for example.

3 5 2 2Such a formation will allow the team to use two strikers, players in wide areas such as Lennon, Townsend or Walker amongst others to chose from, a playmaker in the mould of Eriksen or perhaps even Lamela or Holtby and their powerhouse central midfielders in the mould of Dembele, Paulinho, Sandro and Bentaleb. The need for another leftback to provide backup for Danny Rose is no longer of such importance.

Here are a couple of possible lineups to compliment such a formation, not for use on all occasions I would stress, but for situations that call for something different against teams defending resolutely.
