Are Tottenham’s transfer targets worth getting excited over?

Posted on December 30, 2013 by Random Spurs Supporter

As is always the case at this time of year Tottenham are linked to strikers, it has become the case in recent years, well since the demise of Dimitar Berbatov, that Tottenham have not had a top quality striker in their ranks even though Adebayor flattered to deceive before he secured his contract. Last season it was left to Gareth Bale to become the most influential provider of goals for the team in many a year and now we have Adebayor making a renewed effort to be the main striker and £26m man Roberto Soldado who in fairness is into double figures and is providing some important assists.

Now that the club have abandoned the lone striker role and have switched to a modified two up front they are again linked with new additions to the forward line but new names have entered the fray rather than the usual suspects of recent windows, the latest to be linked are Hernandez of Manchester United and Shane Long of WBA. It seems almost certain that Jermain Defoe is leaving in an effort to find game time in an attempt to secure a place for the next World Cup, if it is to be in the MLS with Toronto he will also earn one last massive payday as well.

If JD is to leave you might think he will have to be replaced and Sherwood might prefer to have two forwards added to the squad to maintain competition and as cover. Are the two linked likely to improve the Tottenham cause and are they the type of player that we should settle for? Hernandez has appeared eleven times in the league for United this season and has a single goal to his name, do you think they would allow him to leave if he was important to them? of course not he is surplus to requirements and they hope to get decent money for him even though they continue to overlook him.

Shane Long is certainly a hardworking forward and one of those with a never say die attitude, he gives his all for the team but he is no prolific goalscorer nor the first name on the teamsheet even for WBA, This is his third season in the Premiership and he played just eighty games either as a starter or from the bench and has just nineteen goals to his name with eight in each of the last two seasons.

The only other link that there has been of any consequence so far is the United reserve left back Buttner, I say reserve left back a little tongue in cheek as he has turned out just seven times for them in two seasons, United are desperate to add another left back and on some occasions when Evra has been unavailable or rested Buttner has still been overlooked.

When once we were linked with Benzema, Di Maria, Contraeo and Hulk now it is players that have failed to make it at clubs faring no better than ourselves at the moment. There has been a link to a Juventus player but before you get excited consider that it is linked to a swap of sorts for our young protege and potential £30m man Erik Lamela, in order to wrest away from Tottenham a player that many consider could be a super star of the future they have seen fit to offer their thirty year old striker who has been so important to them this season that he has featured in just seven games and has just one goal, maybe once he settles into the Premier League and after a couple of years he will become a Tottenham legend!!!!

All in all this January promises very little other than a possible replacement for Defoe if in fact he does leave, Sherwood is on trial and if he doesn’t pass the test a new coach will come along next summer with his own targets and ideas, Levy will wish to keep funds under lock and key until the summer when major decisions will be made. Most of us are probably prepared for this eventuality while hoping our own major stars like Vertonghen, Dembele and Paulinho are not targeted by the like of Barcelona and Madrid as has been suggested at times.

At the moment many Tottenham supporters are feeling and acting like those of Liverpool, a couple of good results and you begin to believe that we have turned the corner and might actually achieve the aims we set out on, and then a result or two slaps us in the face and brings us down to earth until the next couple of wins. Two wins and a draw from our last three league fixtures has brought us right back into contention and next up is United and then Arsenal in the cup, let’s not expect too much from either of those fixtures and then we won’t be so disappointed when we are again brought down to earth, BUT hey we are Tottenham and we won’t ever forget Audere Est Facere.

A striker and a lb pls

    • Tony says:

Thats what we all are expecting that and a centre back perhaps. What do you think we might end up with?

      • Caleb says:

Personally I don’t think there will be much investment at all. I believe one reason Sherwood was given the job is because he knows the players and wouldn’t want to sell any of them and buy others. I think if Sherwood goes in summer there will be a lot of money spent but this jan Sherwood may only add a lb

        • Tony says:

I agree I don’t think they will spend much at all but keep any funds for the new man we expect to come in the summer, having said that a top four place is still not beyond us on paper, i don’t think they should give it up as only three points away.

  2. Eric says:

cb may be in the summer cause kaboul hasn’t been the same.Feel we will end with pato and dodo

  3. Jide says:

I have learnt my lesson from previous disappointments not to raise my hopes of anything happening when It comes to the transfer season (especially the January transfer). Mr Levy had let me down on each occasion. I keep everything crossed and wait and see. We lack players in one or two positions, I only pray that Mr Levy notice that and take the appropriate action to rectify the deficiency. The fact that he cannot afford to let Tim Sherwood fail (as that may affect his position after the AVB failure) may just force his hand.

Let us wait and see what happens.

    • Tony says:

Cannot ever recall a decent january window other than redknapps 1st so not expecting much. I do think we might get a new forward as it all points to defoe leaving and the Pato story might have some legs. The way Fryers is talking it seems Sherwood might trust him at left back so not expecting much to happen there. The Kaboul situation is of concern though it seems as bad if not worse than Ledley , shame he is a good player.

  4. JL says:

We don’t really need a left back.. just bring Assou Ekotto back for cover to rose and we will be fine.. in all honesty, I feel we don’t even need any addition at the moment.. we have enough quality players.. all we need is a good manager to bring out their qualities.. I’m hoping TS can though I’m a little sceptical..

    • Tony says:

Only as cover but will he accept that? If Defoe goes will need another forward and to keep Kane. Four forwards needed iff he sticks to two up front although woyld still like to see Lamela played off front msn.

  5. Eric says:

ekkoto has been rubbish for qpr this season including some onfield antics. He wasn’t good last season too so I hope we get a new lb n striker and sell him n Defoe

    • Tony says:

He seems to be in cahoots with Ade and thats not good for the group. Rose is clearly number one on nerit now and it would be good to see Fryers start to push on.

    • Tony says:

ekotto has become a bit of a liability of late both on and off the pitch with some disgraceful antics. Be happy now to see the back of him. Defoe has had his day and it’s time to move on to a younger different alternative.

  6. eddie says:

I think Defoe will go,so we could do worse than have Jordan Rhodes as back up striker.Buttner as temporary LB till the summer possibly although he’s not great.Forget BAE if he’s not been great for QPR apparently and could be a bad influence on the squad.
I think CB is vital and Lescott would be a great buy if we could prise him away from City.Kaboul must be a risk for now.Give him all the time he needs to get fully fit.Sadly, for all his loyalty Daws is looking too slow to be a guaranteed starter.Great to have in reserve.
I don’t know about Archer, but a good young goalkeeper is a must with Butland,McCarthy or Schmeikel perhaps for consideration.
Would love a really good playmaker, but fear we can’t compete financially to get who we need.
