AVB begins releasing the Tottenham momentum.

Posted on December 13, 2013 by Scraggs

Just another seven changes as AVB continues to manage the squad’s expectations and continues ensure that it is not just eleven players that grow as a team together but an entire group of players. Following on from the weekends performance against Sunderland, during which we saw some excellent midfield domination and team play, AVB chose a team to carry on in the same way and was rewarded with more good attacking play and most importantly a few goals from the £26m man Roberto Soldado.

This was a meaningless game as both teams were assured of their respective positions as first and second in the group table, but it was an opportunity to excite the fans, bring the likes of Danny Rose and Christian Eriksen back from injury slowly, rest some players , persevere with Etienne Capoue in central defence(just in case) and give a couple of their youngsters a taste of the action.

So how did AVB and the team do last night?

Four goals and some superb attacking action will always ensure that our supporters come away from the Lane happy and it could have been many more at both ends of the pitch. The back four was unrecognisable but it was good to see Rose return after so long away and obviously he has been sorely missed. AVB eased him back into the action giving him just the first half to regain some match fitness, by playing Andros Townsend ahead of him to provide the natural width it prevented the need for Rose to bust a gut overlapping and providing the extra width he prefers from his fullback, in the second half he changed it totally by putting Townsend ahead of the youngster Fredericks who clearly enjoyed the experience and was very effective once he overcame his first five minutes of nervous action.

Some of the inter play throughout the match was exceptional and Dembele and Lewis Holtby are really beginning to develop a decent understanding. Some have doubted the ability of Dembele in recent weeks but there is nobody else like him out there and he is becoming a huge presence in the team, if only he could begin to add just a few more goals he would be the complete player. Lewis Holtby has stepped up to another level of late, he has always been a great worker never giving the opposition a moments peace, now he is adding a goal threat to his other attributes, as well as another great goal last night he has started to make more runs into the box and make space to pepper the goal with shots.

The defence was caught square far too often last night but both Fryers and Capoue managed to retrieve the situation each time with one particularly superb tackle back from the latter, With no true defensive midfielder ahead of them and with a completely new back four it was perhaps only to be expected but having said that Capoue brings such composure to the back line that he could in time be a very good alternative.

Of the youngsters who came on clearly Fredericks had an impressive half and was particularly good offensively earning the penalty and creating a couple of other good opportunities, Coulthirst didn’t really have enough time to shine but always looked composed and happy in possession.

Overall a good performance even though the balance wasn’t always right, a couple of important players eased back into the action, plenty of creative play and signs that the team is growing , only the fifth team in the history of the competition to win all six group games and Soldado with four attempts on goal, all on target and three converted.

The squad is so strong that he had to use them all and take some chances with fitness issues. Fredericks looked lost for first 5 or 6 minutes but then got his bearings and did not look out of place. Soldado 4shots 4 on target 3 goals. Just what tge doctor ordered.
