AVB says one thing and means another.

Posted on September 12, 2013 by Scraggs

They say that all good coaches must be able to remove pressure from his players in order that they might produce their best perfomances, yesterday AVB began that process whilst at the same time building up his players, his squad and the club. By playing down Tottenham’s title chances he has at a stroke removed some of the expectancy being placed upon what is a young squad both in terms of age, experience and time spent together.

In the same way Arsene Wenger built up his team to put in some decent performances following their opening day defeat to Villa, by using the media to extol the virtues of togetherness and being together as a group for some considerable time he turned results around.

Yesterday AVB put the Gareth Bale saga behind him, the club and players, he has gone and it is now time to move on and talk about all the quality at Tottenham, the new purchases and those remaining from last season.

Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue, Vlad Chiriches, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela are all 24 or younger and have been tipped for big things.

Villas-Boas said: “We’ve done our transfer activity and invested a lot in young players that have great potential.

“We will have to work with them to make sure they develop into the world stars that we think they can become.”

These are just the new boys also supplemented by a more mature striker at the top of his game, Roberto Soldado has nothing to prove other than to carry on doing what he does best. Put all these fantastic players together with all of last years stars and the return of Rose, Townsend, Kaboul and Sandro and you have a powerful group of players just needing to spend time together as a group.

AVB has removed pressure from the media and most importantly from the clubs own supporters by lowering expectation while the team move ahead and gel, even though he has said it is too early for his team some of his words suggest otherwise and have the added bonus of building up his players as individuals.

The Spurs boss said: “All of them have great ambition to succeed, which is one of the criteria we wanted – ambitious people that want to win titles – and now it’s creating a team that bonds together and assumes the responsibility of winning those titles.

“That is what we have in our hands to go forward.

Make no mistake AVB wants much more than what he achieved last season, more than 72 points, more than the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup competition and a decent run or better in the domestic cups. AVB is a coach in a hurry, he has other ambitions beyond football but he also wants to win as many competitions as possible before then. He transformed Porto almost overnight, trying to do the same at Chelsea was a mistake but he now seems intent on trying again at Tottenham, this time though he and Daniel Levy seem to want even more as they try to create the dynasty that Harry Redknapp talked of.

The transfer window is shut, Gareth Bale has gone and now it’s down to AVB, Steffen Freund and the rest of the coaching team to make the team tick and win games. For the moment I am happy to accept what AVB has to say but deep down every Tottenham supporter wants and expects more, much more and that within the words of AVB I also think that he does too.

  1. Adam Harvey says:

I really hope that Spurs can finish in second place. Please god let this happen.

  2. It’s unlikely they will win the title outright but a top four finish is almost a certainty at this point.

    • Tony says:

In all honesty that is the reality of the situation but theres nothing wrong in hoping for the bewst. AVb is a special coach in my opinion, he knows what it takes to win and now he has a fair few players who are winners or desperate to do so.spurs will get more points i think and it’s then down to how many the others can achieve.

  3. 5th again says:

Three games three very average performances ya win the league no prob ha ha ha.

  4. Tony says:

only real concern is city the others are beatable in the league.
