AVB set to shuffle the pack in Europe.

Posted on September 17, 2013 by Guest Writer

Tottenham play at home again on Thursday and this time it is in the UEFA Cup group stages against the Norwegian club Tromso. We know that AVB has a particular liking for this competition and with such a squad of talent at his disposal he also needs to do well in every cup in order to keep every member of the squad up to match pace and fitness.

The ability in this Tottenham squad is so substantial that there no longer exists the culture of there being a first team or a second team, as was the case during the Redknapp years, with AVB it’s all about the squad at his disposal and what is needed on any given day, there will almost certainly be a large number of changes for this fixture mainly to enable others to hone their levels but also because there is another league fixture less than 72 hours later and a Capital One cup game 48 hours after that.

Team prediction for Tromso on Thursday.

Team prediction for Tromso on Thursday.

AVB will not be choosing his back up team for Thursday but rather the other first team players available to him, he must shuffle things around to cope with times when there is a rush of fixtures, like now, and the odd injury problem. A couple of the new signings will need some serious game time to fully integrate after a number of training sessions with their new teammates. Subject to the latest news regarding injuries and knocks this is the team that we expect AVB to choose for Thursday, with the only reservations relating to Chadli and his recovery from a slight knock and whether he considers Zeki Fryers yet ready for action in a much changed team. Presumably the work permit will have been resolved by now in relation to Vlad Chiriches allowing him to make his debut, after all he is a regular in the Romanian team and their current captain.

Take a look at the team that we are predicting and you surely cannot fail to be excited by the quality, consider that if correct then there will be ten changes to the lineup that started on Saturday against Norwich, bear in mind also that Aaron Lennon and Etienne Capoue are injured, that Adebayor is on walkabout and there are still a couple of good youngsters in their ranks.

AVB really is spoilt for choice but with it comes the difficult part of winning games and just as importantly keeping his players happy and involved. With so many elite players to choose from he needs games for them to be involved in on a weekly basis, that is why all the cup competitions are so important now.

Expecting another exciting game on Thursday and hopefully a big glimpse of the quality of Lamela and Chiriches.

I’d be happy with that team. We should dominate Tromso. They are in the Norwegian League which is currently ranked 26 in the Uefa Coefficient, which is 4 places lower than Scotland. The only threat to getting a great result will be the fact that the team is completely unfamiliar with itself.

I think for the future Chiriches will be best paired with Dawson due to the fact that Chiriches’s supposed impetuousness will be complimented by Dawson’s more stalwart defensive qualities.

    • Eric says:

agreed it can also give valuable experience to players like kane fryers naughton.I find naughton under rated as a rb.Rose recently said that he’s amazing in training n feels sad he doesn’t get games to show that

      • Tony says:

I think Naughton is probably of an age when he he doesn’t need experience but more time on the pitch. He is great cover for both fullback spots and if Walker was out for any time would easily fill in. When I think back to the team Redknapp had to put out for this competition to save his first choice players, this really is a tremendous bunch now.Look at the ages of them and you can see that the next five or six years are going to be amazing.

    • Tony says:

Should be a fairly simple excersise but as you say need time. I think it’s Dawson and Kaboul for the right central spot and vertonghen and Chiriches for the left which they favour, also quite similar in that they both are capable going forward, in fact Dawson is probably the only defender we have that prefers to sit back as all the others are a bit swashbuckling.

  2. Eric says:

kane on the bench may be ?

  3. Eric says:

I’d rather let ade leave cause Kane will get experience playing cup games n europa n may be pl at times n ade isn’t in our long term plans. Most likely will be sold in Jan

    • Tony says:

either that or will go and play at qpr with tom carroll, at least you know harry will give him his chance. still can’t help but feel gutted that Ade cannot be relied upon to be part of a squad, always seems happy but there must be some demons in there somewhere.

  4. eddie monk says:

Yes a pretty strong side for these easy stages of Europe.I have to agree about Naughton.Against Tiblisi, playing in his normal position RB, he looked a lot more comfortable especially linking well with Townsend who didn’t wander inside when he didn’t have the ball.
If Fryers can step up to the plate then although Naughton wouldn’t necessarily be back up for both fullback slots,at least the pair of them could get good Cup game time.Let’s hope for their sake we enjoy lengthy runs in all four competitions.
This promises to be a very profitable season me thinks. The only problem I can see AVB having is settling on his preferred first 11,but that would perhaps be dictated by the opponents on the day.

    • Tony says:

I think he has far to many good players to settle on a first eleven, probably 16 or 17 of the squad could play all the time with only a few as genuine utility players. I cannot wait to see Chiriches play as although he will make the odd blunder I’m sure he looks such an exciting defender prepared to maraud forward and attack. i agree that now Naughton is probably plenty good enough at RB but Walker offers something different and his stats really are something for someone so slated. Need good runs now especially against villa on tuesday.
