Congratulations Jermain Defoe.

Last night Jermain Defoe finally achieved a landmark in his ttottenham career when he finally beat the European goal record of Martin Chivers that has stood for forty years, his twenty-third goal came from the penalty spot and was expertly taken, no fancy chip or clever penalty but simply a straightforward effort of power and accuracy into the roof of the net giving the keeper absolutely no chance.

Defoe’s first goal for Tottenham in the same competition came on the 14th December 2006 against Dinamo Bucharest when he scored a brace in the 39th and 50th minute to add to the earlier goal by Dimitar Berbatov, Tottenham won that day by 3-1 and advanced to the knockout stages where they were to eventually lose in the quarter finals to Sevilla but not before Defoe added to his tally.┬áDuring Tottenham’s one only involvement in the Champions League too date Jermaine Defoe also showed that he could cut it at the higher level with a goal in the two legged play off and another brace in the group stages, considering his coach at the team preferred the Crouch and Van de Vaart partnership up front JD made an impressive contribution from limited opportunities that season.

At the moment the record stands at twenty-three goals but as we already know Tottenham still have a couple of group games to play before the knockout stages begin next year, the chances of Defoe adding to his tally is extremely likely, with part of the job done and with Tottenham having already assured themselves of top spot in the table the pressure is off and a couple of fluent performances against teams with little left to play for will surely ensure his record is extended before the year is out.

AVB has said that having qualified that he would use the next couple of games to give some experience to some of the younger up and coming players, Harry Kane is an obvious example, Kane deserves his chance in the limelight but with a World Cup coming up and the need for Defoe, as the current number 2 striker, to keep in shape and sharp it should not be at Defoe’s expense, perhaps wide left of him and then resting JD for the last twenty minutes to allow Kane to take over the central striker position.

There seems to be more and more articles written about the need for Defoe to start in the Premiership more regularly, with the recent references to West Ham by the player himself and even Sam Allardyce perhaps a move back to east London is in the offing which would be a shame, JD has been instrumental in helping Tottenham grow into genuine top four contenders, possibly even a little higher this season.

Defoe joined the club as a 21 year old of exceptional ability and ten years later and after a short move to Portsmouth along the way he is now a record holder at Tottenham much adored by the fans. As they say “Defoe is one of us”
