Could Tottenham really pull off a shock at Anfield?

Posted on March 30, 2014 by Scraggs

Would Tottenham achieving a result at Anfield or even beating the surprise title challengers today really be such a massive shock? they face a team in form offensively but a team still vulnerable defensively and if they have an achilles heel that is it. Tottenham still have an impressive away record, one that is actually better than every team ahead of them in the table and they still have the quality in the squad to achieve the result that they need.

Current form dictates that Liverpool will win and win handsomely, they have the opportunity to go to the top of the table, they have already thrashed Tottenham at White Hart Lane and they have two of the most prolific goalscorers in the League within their ranks, Tottenham on the other hand are fresh off the back of a decent performances against Arsenal, Benfica and Southampton though only the latter produced the result required.

There does seems to be far too much negativity surrounding the perception of the quality of the Tottenham players, a situation that some believe has been created by Sherwood as a means of covering his own shortcomings, remember, this is a squad that was a point short of a top four position last season, they have lost Gareth Bale but introduced some world renowned replacements at significant cost to replace him, yet they they are spoken of as being inferior and yet a good number would still compete to get into many of the teams above and around Tottenham in the table.

Only foolish or extremely ardent Liverpool supporters would have expected their team to be in the position they are in now as most would have expected little more than a decent challenge for a crack at fourth, most of the team that finished last season still turns out for them most weeks but they create so many chances and have the players to finish those chances off.

Tottenham certainly have the players to achieve a result, playing away from home seems to suit their style in front of the amazing travelling Tottenham fans but to do so they will have to get out of the blocks quickly and the team will have to be set up correctly from the start. Clearly against Liverpool they must not start with such a suicidal high line of defence, must be competitive in midfield and ensure the wide areas are not vulnerable and so this is surely the time to move Eriksen into his favoured position in the centre.

It seems that Kyle Walker is not yet ready to return and he will be a big miss with his strength and pace down the right and though Adebayor is fit once again perhaps this is the time to persevere with the £26m man Soldado off the back of a good performance against Southampton, hopefully Dembele has regained fitness and is available in the centre ahead of the youngster Bentaleb who probably hasn’t yet got the experience to be exposed to such a crucial fixture.

Though Tottenham’s chances of a top four position remain extremely slim a win today will at least give them hope for the remainder of the season with Arsenal floundering of late, though Everton are also now making a strong charge our fixture list looks by far the easier after today.

Let’s not forget that Tottenham were only bettered by four teams last season and though arguable strengthened considerably in the aftermath of the Bale sale, if they get their act together a result at Anfield is not beyond them but then as we know to our cost a goals capitulation is never far away either. If ever a case for the right coach was needed then Brendan Rodgers is that coach as the same players that have looked so inept at times over recent seasons are now producing title winning displays.

Irrespective of how the season pans out after today the Tottenham players should be looking to seek retribution for the embarrassment suffered in December and though the consensus of opinion is that they are looking down the barrel of another hammering they have the quality all over the pitch to upset the odds, Palace didn’t just edge Chelsea yesterday they fully deserved their victory as they were tactically correct on the day and put in the effort a couple of the attributes that Tottenham also will need.

The roles have reversed in that Liverpool had to travel and play in midweek while Tottenham prepared for today and I am fully expecting that to pay off with a decent performance at the very least.
