Defoe or Soldado? AVB has difficult decision to make.

Posted on September 25, 2013 by Scraggs

As each new fixture approaches their importance grows, whether a league fixture with three points at stake and the dream of Champions League football, or maybe more, at the end of the rainbow, or perhaps one of the cups with the Capital One Cup and UEFA Cup competitions now well under way. No matter what the circumstances players and supporters want to win and the pressure on the man who makes the decisions must be enormous.

AVB is the man responsible for picking the team for each fixture and for setting them up to win games, already his squad is performing so well that there is no obvious weak link and when you consider that five or six big players have still to return from injury the decisions will only become harder to make. Handling the squad and ensuring results is what separates the best from the rest.

Take last nights cup game at Villa, Jermain Defoe added another brace of goals to his tally, that’s six in just three games, he also assisted with Nacer Chadli’s first goal for the club, that strike rate would normally lead to a starting berth in the team on Saturday against Chelsea, the alternative is Roberto Soldado, rested for last nights game following his exertions on Sunday. His record is just four in six starts although that does not tell the whole story. Soldado is a striker who always seems to hit the target, is rarely caught offside, which is impressive for a forward who plays on the shoulder of the last man, and if you watch his movement seems to find space in the most crowded of areas.

AVB has set his team up to play a high line, they have lots of possession and look to win the ball back quickly and strike rapidly on goal, having a forward rarely caught in an offside position offers a massive advantage and enables the team to retain possession rather than turnover to the opposition cheaply.

Tottenham are fortunate in that they now have two prolific forwards each offering different options to the team as well as goals, AVB has a difficult decision to make but sentiment and a fantastic strike rate in relatively easy cup fixtures changes little, Soldado will start and is the most effective striker in all but goals so far.

Much as I hope JD sees out his career at Tottenham, moves up the scoring charts for club and country and lifts a trophy or a few this year and in the future, for me it must be Soldado every time.

defoe doesn’t perform against tougher opponents. He should start all our cup n europa games n continue the good form since it will be vital whenever called up in pl games.Soldado deserves chance to prove himself

  2. Jide says:

It has to be Soldado. It’s only a matter of time before he starts hitting the net prolifically.

  3. steve says:

whatever they might say JD still better in 4 4 2 a formation of the past.He does a good job on his own when asked to but against the top clubs reduces the level of performance of the team although still gets the odd goal.He is now best as a gamechanger from the bench.
    Soldado is quality.

I think AVB should carry on rotating the way he is at the moment.
