Do Tottenham really miss these players?

Posted on September 16, 2013 by Scraggs

There are some that won’t let the Modric and Bale transfer dealings go away even though the team coped admirably without Modric last season and seem to be doing quite nicely without Bale so far this. Last season Tottenham managed to record their highest points total in the clubs Premier League history leading to a stellar season from Bale and ultimately his exit as a result of his form. Even now, or at least up until the Christian Eriksen show on Saturday, many reports written had fixated on the lack of a creative spark that a player like Luka Modric brought to the team and others the missing goals following Bales exit. spursThis particular picture has been doing the rounds of late, no doubt to wind up Tottenham supporters, whilst every fan of the club would rather both players had stayed at the time it wasn’t to be and we are left asking the question, should Levy have dug his heels in?

Had they stayed think how the squad might have looked now or how thin it would be in depth and ability, with the departure of just two fantastic players Tottenham have been able to add so much talent to their squad and my belief is that the club is in a far healthier position as a result. If we had been able to keep both players and still brought in most of the new additions of the past year then the team would be stronger of course, but this is Tottenham, well run and sensible with money and rightly so.

We entered a new era a year ago led by a coach blessed with great ability who seems to understand the club as well as his players, during his short time with Tottenham it certainly appears that the standard of many of the players as individuals has actually improved, take Bale for instance, he had been very good for a couple of years, but perhaps £30m good, he started off last season in a  relatively average fashion failing to hit the goal trail or even lighting up the team, after a few months of working with Villas-Boas and a couple of tweeks to the style of the team and Bale grew into a superstar, even then £86m is way over the top for just one player who is still behind Ronaldo and Messi by a fair way at the moment.

If Tottenham supporters should start to feel a little depressed at the sight of two of our stars appearing for Madrid then they should just think about and consider all the improvements and the sheer quality that the £120m they fetched brought to the club.

A year ago Tottenham purchased another bunch of players that AVB had to integrate into the team, a far harder task because as the new man himself he had it all to do with the entire squad. Gylfi Sigurdsson joined and then Jan Vertonghen followed by the much underrated Moussa Dembele and the French captain and keeper Hugo Lloris. In January Zeki Fryers, one for the future, and Lewis Holtby came on board. On to the summer break and the expectation that AVB would be allowed a decent pot of money to improve the squad and show real intent to the players, especially Gareth Bale, because of failure to gain entry into the Champions League. The remainder of the summer transfer window is history but it is probably fair to say that Tottenham supporters are a very happy bunch at the moment.

So here we are four games into the season and after having seen two of our stars depart for Real Madrid in a little over a year tottenham sit level with their old adversaries arsenal at the summit of the Premier League, most supporters don’t even believe they are now in a false position because as well as all those players added last season Younes Kaboul and Sandro are back as well as Andros Townsend and Danny Rose from very successful loan periods, to cap it all off this transfer window has brought another seven new signings, everyone of them absolute quality which surely nobody will deny. Soldado apart, who brings the promise of goals to make up for those lost by Bales departure, all the others are still young and have many years yet before they reach their peak and this means that the future for Tottenham is bright, positively blinding if AVB can get them all up and firing quickly.

Yes, every Tottenham supporter does miss Modric and Bale, they were great players for the club, but more than that their departure and the money it brought might now project Tottenham to even greater things. AVB is a special coach and he now has a special squad to work with, no doubt there will still be a weakness or two, only minor maybe, and it will be a situation that can be addressed in the January transfer window if needs be. Tottenham have spent nothing in the last three transfer windows but have simply used funds from sales, they sit in a healthy position both financially and with the coaching and playing staff now at their disposal.

In answer to the question, No, the club is now and always will be bigger than any individual, both believed the grass was greener elsewhere and yet Modric is still searching for silverware! We wish them no ill feeling but it’s all about Tottenham Hotspur FC and their departures have, in my opinion, strengthened the club as a whole.

They have been replaced well enough but I’m sure anybody would love to have Modric and Bale back in the team.

    • Scraggs says:

didn’t want them to leave in the first place but without the money received cannot believe the squad would be as strong. £120m received and spent ,thank you Madrid.
