Has Pochettino seen enough in Rose and Fryers to abandon Davies pursuit?

Posted on July 16, 2014 by Eddie S

Swansea Chairman Huw Jenkins has recently admitted that since early contact from Tottenham in relation to their left back Ben Davies there has been no evidence of their following up the enquiry. were Tottenham put off by an apparent valuation of £12m for a player that they value at £8m- £10m, are they simply biding their time or looking elsewhere? Perhaps the answer is a lot closer to home particularly as the squad have now been back for pre-season training for over a week.

Our new man Mauricio Pochettino certainly seems to know something about fullbacks, during his 18 months at Southampton though he had some talent to work with some of their defenders have almost become household names during this transfer window, Luke Shaw was a known quantity but he has now gone on to secure a spot in the England team and secured a big money move to Manchester United, both rightbacks, Callum Chambers and Nathaniel Clyne have attracted interest from bigger clubs.

In central defence he has taken a £7m unknown and turned him into a central defender being sought by two or three of the clubs who finished ahead of Southampton with a price tag of £25m, Lovren has seen his stock rise substantially in the space of a single season, evem Fonte is in some demand.

Has Pochettino and his staff seen enough from Rose and Fryers to call off the search for a replacement at left back? Perhaps we Tottenham fans are being a little harsh on Danny Rose as he was afterall part of the defence that fared so well during the opening fifteen or so games when a defence was watertight, that if we care to remember began to change only once Rose suffered the injury that was only meant to keep him out for a couple of weeks and turned into 3 months.

Zeki Fryers has another years experience behind him and might yet be moulded into the player to one day make the position his own, we know that he possesses pace and we know that he was highly thought of by Sir Alex and even managed to turn out for the first team in the champions League.

Even though there is a belief that Tottenham have a handsome transfer kitty to work with, if they can save spending on what was a troublesome position it might mean that they can throw some serious money at a couple of other marquis signings where most needed and that would include central defence and up front.

With the trip to the USA about to start it will be very interesting to see what pans out and how the players react to the new regime and the methods that they will be asked to employ, perhaps there is more to Rose and Fryers than the abysmal tactical nous of Tim Sherwood not only failed to show but quite possibly let down by employing Christian Eriksen ahead of them thus exposing them to the superior tactics and players of the top teams.

What seemed obvious during sherwoods time in charge was that Rose seemed to suffer with his positional play, seemed forever to be exposed and though he often managed to get forward and into dangerous positions he rarely delivered the right ball.

Tottenham supporters clearly believe that a new left back and another top quality central defender with pace is required, add to that another forward and they would probably be reasonably satisfied and sit back and support the new coach to the hilt, what they might make of Rose starting the new season I am not too sure, me I’ll support the decision of the new man and expect to see the team begin the season reasonably well with the brand of football and results steadily improving as the season gets underway.
