Erik Lamela to start for Tottenham, what will he bring to the party?

Posted on September 19, 2013 by Scraggs

At long last the Tottenham faithful and the British public will finally see what all the fuss is about and just what the club have invested more than £25m on, Erik Lamela looks set to finally make his bow from the outset and bring his unique talents to the Lane. Tottenham have invested an enormous sum of money in a 21 yr old with years of improvement ahead of him, that money and close to another £5m will be paid depending on results but still remains a gamble as Lamela is far from the finished article just yet. Franco Baldini has persuaded Daniel Levy to stump up such a huge sum because he and all the Tottenham experts recognise that Lamela is a player that could be the next Tottenham superstar and be one of a number of catalysts to take Tottenham forward

What Lamela brings to the party now is a player with an eye for goal, with 15 in just 33 games for Roma last season, those goals ranged from exciting individual efforts, fantastic shots from long range and even a couple of taps ins to indicate he is a player to be in the right spot at the right time. Apart from a superb strike rate for a second striker/midfielder he also created 56 chances for his teammates, a creditable number.

Our new number 11, He certainly looks the part.

Our new number 11, He certainly looks the part.

Watch him closely and you will see a player who is a quick and a powerful runner with the ball, he goes past opposing players with ease as he possess incredible technical ability and quick feet. Roma were apparently grooming Lamela as the long term replacement for one of their all time greats, the legendary Francesco Totti, they have similar accuracy records and while Totti still creates far more chances with 102 accredited to him last season, Lamela scored more goals and had a far better passing accuracy.

Assuming that he does start tonight’s game what position will he take up? our very own Ossie Ardilles has already spoken of his versatility, a player able to take up the No.10 role, all the rage these days, or able to operate right or left. I suppose it will depend on who else starts tonight, if it is Andros Townsend then he will almost certainly continue on the right of Jermain Defoe with Lamela on the left, if it’s Sigurdsson retaining his spot on the left then he will take up the spot on the right. In some respects it might be preferable to start both Lamela and Eriksen from the outset, with Eriksen being on such a high and probably the most creative player at the club.

Undoubtedly there will be many changes tonight as AVB must take into account games on Sunday and Tuesday. However important winning a trophy is to the club and it’s supporters the undoubted priority is now to finish the season having achieved Champions League qualification, with the quality of player now on the books that must be the minimum expectation.

We might see some of the youngsters chosen to participate in tonight’s fixture at some stage, players like Harry Kane and Zeki Fryers, both highly regarded and players for the future, but another couple should be Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen, they cost the club the best part of £40m and might one day be worth much, much more to a club like Real Madrid for example!
