Expected Tottenham lineup v Palace

Posted on January 11, 2014 by Eddie S

After winning ten points from a possible twelve Tim Sherwood will be thinking that he has got the hang of the Premier League already, today he sends his team out to face a lowly Palace team still in the relegation zone and battling for every point. Hopefully he will not take the opposition for granted as since Tony Pullis has taken over their form has greatly improved, he has had a week to work on their defensive attributes and will have his team set up to make things extremely difficult for Tottenham and for their new novice coach.

We all know that Jermain Defoe, Lewis Holtby, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Andros Townsend are once again fit and available for selection, it is not absolutely clear the current fitness levels of Erik Lamela nor Younes Kaboul  and Sandro but it sounds very much as though none are yet available for selection.

So with at least four more players available for selection which team will Sherwood send out to face a battling Palace? Well it goes without saying that right now the keeper and back four picks itself and so there will be no shocks in that department just yet, up front it seems pretty obvious that it will be Adebayor and Soldado, provided the latter has recovered from his slight knock,

especially against this opposition and at home. In midfield is where the dilemmas occur, in the past two fixtures Sherwood has started with four of Lennon, Dembele, Bentaleb, Eriksen and Capoue and though he has three others available for selection my guess is that he will not change much at all. If he replaces Eriksen on the left and brings him into the centre then the effectiveness of Dembele will be diluted as he will have to assume more defensive duties.

Tim Sherwood said after the defeat to Arsenal that he had the entire week to work with the team and develop his ideas so it will be interesting to see exactly how it will affect things today, it will be almost as interesting and perhaps as telling which players are sat on the bench today, some omitted might well be looking for a new club this month.

Same again just like Redknapp. Should win comfortably but he is one dimensional.

  2. Eric says:

Shocking Bentaleb starts ahead of capoue

  3. grant says:

totally unbalanced team with eriksen on left, adebayor very average and soldado struggling. this is a shambles and they have been on the training pitch getting used to tims ideas! The more I see the more I’m convinced this is a train wreck of a season.

  4. Boobaspur says:

How did we shambles our way out of that one? A truly awful first half showing.

On 7mins I wasn’t even worried with the early penalty but as the half came to a close it was obvious how fortunate that penalty miss was.

Much better 2nd half which isn’t saying much. Soldado looks positively disinterested at this stage. At one point I imagined to myself him saying “what the hell am I doing in this place”.

I hope letting JD go isn’t a huge mistake – his movement was brilliant today and within moment of coming on, he made Soldado look like a slug.

A very average performance – the football gods are definitely shining down on Tim Sherwood – however long more that will remain to be the case, who knows?

Bentaleb was decent and responsible for the only two highlights in a dismal first half.

    • Tony says:

A pretty accurate summing up in what was a very average performance. Dembele and Bentaleb were decent but no other parts of the team impressed. The two front men don’t work together at all while Eriksen on the left does not work. i can only recall one cross into the box from lennon, none from rose beating the first man. sherwood had his week on the training ground and it didn’t work. Did either of the two starting forwards have a shot today? It just seems that Sherwood has picked 2 forwards and asked them to play a withdrawn role. This football is no more exciting than any earlier in the season. 68% possession 10 shots,4 on target and fewer than the opposition. If this is the Tottenham some wanted back you can keep it.

    • mick says:

That first half was dire, away to Swansea next who will have plenty of possession. surely it won’t be the same starting lineup for that>

  5. lou says:

If you are going to play two up top then JD and a big man to win headers and flick-ons is the way, too bad he’s leaving. 13 points from 15 but not sure how.
