FA Cup predictions (Saturday)

Posted on February 15, 2014 by Eddie S

With a weeks break before we restart Premiership action all over again we are left with the FA Cup to mull over this weekend and there are some tasty fixtures to consider. Provided all the teams participate fully and do not roll over and treat the competition as a distraction then this weekend could throw up some very interesting results and some problems for teams that have bigger fish to fry.

  • Sunderland v Southampton 12:45
  • Given the chance  every Sunderland fan would gladly give up any further FA Cup glory if it meant survival and Premiership football next season, with a trip to Wembley already in the bag in the Capital One Cup this fixture takes on some irrelevance in the bigger scheme of things and Gus Poyet will almost certainly protect his players as much as possible. Southampton are a totally different matter, this competition is now the main focus of their season as a miserable run of form before Xmas has left them all but out of the running for Europe and their position in the top eight is all but assured.. Away win 0-2.

    The FA Cup

  • Cardiff v Wigan 15:00
  • There is in all honesty not that much to choose between these two teams though they play in different leagues. the holders Wigan were in a very similar situation last season and Cardiff will certainly not wish to replicate those events exactly.  Wigan will not wish to relinquish their title as cup holders easily but this is probably the end of the road for them as Cardiff look for form. Home win 3-1.
  • Sheff Wed v Charlton 15:00
  • Two Championship teams battle it out for the chance to be in the draw and to get an opportunity to play a money spinning tie against one of the big teams. Charlton are in one of the relegation places at the moment and Wednesday are not too far off them so this is perhaps a bit of a distraction yet both have lived up to the traditions of this most famous of cup competitions and fought their way to this point. Home advantage and Home win 2-0.
  •  Man City v Chelsea 17:15
  • The big one as the two title favourites face off again so soon after City were humiliated by Chelsea in the league recently. On that occasion City were outfought and out thought and though both have bigger targets this season their ego will ensure a tough game and a genuine battle for dominance. With Arsenal and Liverpool facing one another tomorrow in another top four clash the teams chasing one of the Champions League places will be praying for this to end in a draw, both clubs have the Champions League to contend with in upcoming weeks while City also have to fit in the postponed fixture  and Capital One Cup final against Sunderland. Pride will ensure  both teams go for it. Draw 1-1.
