Get ready to fear the power of theTottenham strike force.

Posted on July 18, 2013 by Eddie S

At the moment we are still being informed by some reporters that Chelsea are another club in the frame and fighting for the signature of Christian Benteke, quite why I am not sure, it seems that Wayne Rooney is their new striker of choice at the moment, a completely different type of operator. Any interest Chelsea might have once had in Benteke has evaporated, they already have Lukaku, a player of similar size and style and just a couple of years younger, both are full Belgian Internationals and both had a decent return of goals in the Premier League last season. Chelsea also have Fernando Torres quite capable of playing alone up front and having cost a tidy £50m you would expect that Mourinho, being the  supposed best coach on the planet and Chelsea saviour, might get the best from him. they also have a certain Demba Ba only purchased in January of this year but seemingly already surplus to requirements. Chelsea we must also remember purchased Schurrie this month at great expense and unless he is intending to replace Eden Hazard it must be assumed he is expected to be the second striker.

Benteke, the player that Tottenham have identified to galvanize the team and bring a greater goal threat had an enormously successful season, in fact as the season progressed and he began to adapt and find his feet his performance levels and goal threat improved, a great sign that there is still far more to come from him.

In some fashion AVB will set up the team with Benteke, once the deal is sealed, as the focal point, with Gareth Bale floating around, as he now does, threatening the opposition from anywhere he feels he can best operate. More threat will come from Aaron Lennon, still one of the fastest, trickiest players out there and surprisingly improving his game under the tutelage of AVB. Most Tottenham supporters still believe that Nacer Chadli is a realistic target and will bring more goals to the proceedings, and then there is Andros Townsend, Sigurdsson and probably Dempsey to worry about.

The rest of Tottenham’s midfield options will also need watching as Dembele will be encouraged to trust his goalscoring attributes and remember that he was bought by Fulham predominantly as a striker before he was converted into a midfield dynamo, and then there is the new record signing from Brazil, Paulinho just seems to have the lot, especially a significant goal threat either aerially from set pieces or in general open play.

Holtby, Carroll and Sandro will probably all be charged with providing different attributes to the team, although there is the feeling that Holtby does have goals in him and Sandro will continue to attempt the odd spectacular strike.

For the past few season Tottenham have been chasing games because their goal difference was always suspect in relation to other teams around them, this season it is looking likely that things might be about to change, the team appears to be stronger defensively with the return of Kaboul and extra pace and protection in midfield, and there is a strong feeling that there will be a greater return of goals with more players with goalscoring attributes to call upon.

Of course it could all go wrong and Tottenham must ensure that the purchase goes ahead, but all looks extremely promising so far and there is hope that Benteke will be packing his bags and setting off with Tottenham to Hong Kong this weekend.
