Gomes could be Tottenham’s No.2 keeper after International break.

Posted on October 09, 2013 by Eddie S

Many wondered why Tottenham chose to keep three senior keepers in their squad at the close of the transfer window but perhaps their reasons are now starting to become clear, there are a number of reports appearing suggesting that Brad Friedel has been interviewed for the job as coach of Columbus crew, a club he played at before setting off for the Premier League many years ago.

Friedel is now of an age when most others would have called it quits many years ago, but here he is still going strong and fit and able whenever called upon. He has been working on his coaching badges for some time now in preparation for the time he finally has to call it a day, of late he has been popping up more and more on talk shows and on TV, no doubt giving himself the option to move into the media aspect of the game until such time as the right coaching opportunity arises.

Brad Friedel has proved himself to be a very articulate, level headed, honourable person and if he is offered the job it is doubtful that Tottenham would begrudge him the opportunity or stand in his way. Hugo Lloris is the clubs first choice keeper and has played in all but a couple of fixtures so far this season, while Gomes has been out in the cold for so long now it was a surprise he was named in their squad, having said that he was such a firm favourite with supporters, until mistakes started to creep into his game, that he will be given a fair chance should the situation arise and in cup games when the need arises to give Lloris a break..

Should Friedel take the plunge and return to his homeland he will go in the knowledge that he has been a huge success wherever he has played and always been an absolute professional. he can still do a job but he will be 43 next birthday and the time to call it a day must be close.

Huerelio Gomes is an experienced keeper who still believes in his ability, if Tottenham have to rely upon his services as a backup until January at least then so be it, he has been training hard with the other two keepers as well as the likes of Jordan Archer and perhaps with a bit of action in the cup games might regain some form and so earn the transfer that a keeper of his ability probably deserves.gomes

No doubt the matter will reach some sort of conclusion well before the international break is over and we must wait to see what finally occurs.

I’ve been saying Gomes would be ideal as our 2nd choice for some time now. He cannot handle the weight of expectation of playing week in, week out, but he has excellent reflexes and has a lot of natural goalkeeping talent for someone who we may need for only 10 to 20 games a season mostly in the cups, of course.

He has been out in the cold now for so long; ever since he made the huge mistake of admitting that he would always be prone to the occasional lapse in concentration shortly after our loss to Real Madrid. The problem Spurs are posed with now is how to bring him back into the fold after being out for so long.

if it happens he will be ready as was on loan last season and had plenty of game time. the supporters will shout for him if he plays he even has his own song.
