Harry Kane can be Tottenham’s Leandro Damiao.

Posted on October 11, 2013 by Scraggs

It has long been said that all the coaching staff at Tottenham and Tim Sherwood in particular have particularly high hopes for 20 yr old Harry Kane and he has been around the Tottenham first team for a couple of seasons already, even managing to open his goalscoring account in Europe for them. Being such a young lad most of his playing experience has been gained while on loan with Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester and it is perhaps a little surprising that AVB  kept him around the first team squad rather than send him on loan this season.

Kane was only called up to the England U20 squad in May and had an immediate impact with a goal and an assist in the tournament played over the summer, after just three appearances for the U20’s he has now progressed to a starting spot for the U21’s after making his debut in August as a substitute. Last night in his fourth outing he managed to score a hat-trick playing in a relatively orthodox centre forward position. Admittedly San Marino were reduced to ten men by a poor referring decision but Kane took his chances and kept the match ball for his accomplishment. His third goal was probably the pick of the bunch as his finish from an acute angle after going past the keeper was excellent.

Harry Kane the England U21 No.9,

Harry Kane the England U21 No.9,

Whenever Kane has been asked to play for Tottenham, as well as for much of his time while on loan, he has been asked to play as the second or withdrawn striker, even when appearing for Tottenham this season he seems to have operated from the left side of midfield. Last night he operated as the centre forward and wore the coveted number 9 shirt for England and was the focal point of the attack. Kane has always scored goals, he packs a powerful shot and is not afraid to try his luck, perhaps he is now beginning to grow into the position Tottenham have been grooming him for.

As any Tottenham supporter will tell you Leandro Damiao has apparently been on the clubs wishlist for an eternity but in reality it has probably been just a couple of years, he is a big striker, fairly mobile and technically very good, should we now start to compare Harry Kane to him? you will notice that Kane is slightly taller standing at 6’2″ and he is probably a little quicker than Dameao, while still a youngster he is technically very sound and now it seems that he might be about to relish the role of lone striker. Of course Harry Kane does not have the experience of Damiao who is after all four years older and has experienced a completely different footballing culture, but Kane does seem to be developing well. Depending upon the situation at Tottenham in January, and that revolves around participation in competitions, the form of the other strikers in the squad and the needs of the squad, it might be decided that the best option will be for him to be loaned out to gain more first team experience in the Premier League, not unlike Caulker, Rose, Walker and Townsend in recent times to great effect.

There is a feeling around Tottenham supporters that the club have a number of special young players, Townsend and Rose have come up through the ranks, Lamela, Holtby and Eriksen have been bought, while Harry Kane and Tom Carroll are the next generation of which much is expected along with Alex Pritchard, Christian Ceballos and one or two others.

The really big money is generally spent on forwards and especially prolific goalscorers, perhaps Kane is going to become that special player that has been sought for so long. Everybody seems to be talking about Chelsea’s Lukaku who is now on loan at Everton, he is only slightly taller than Kane, is probably not as quick and I would suggest not as technically gifted, they are of similar age with Kane being a couple of months younger. At the moment Lukaku is perhaps slightly ahead in his education as a centre forward as a result of his successful loan to WBA last season, it will now be interesting to see which route that Tottenham now take for Kane in the development of his career.

Good article. I fear he will end up like lots of good english players never given a real chance and so never quite fulfill their potential. Hope i’m wrong!

    • Tony says:

Not sure Spurs are like that anymore, plenty getting a chance now and Tim Sherwood seems to be the catalyst. Walker, Caulker, Rose, Townsend and now Townsend getting chances. Kane and Carroll and possibly Pritchard and Ceballos will probably get their chance. Kane is only just 20 and has something about him, I was surprised that he was 6’2″, for a lump he has fantastic skills on the deck, if he can add a bit of aerial power we might be onto something specia;.

  2. Andy says:

He shows flashes, just every so often, that he has something. I think he needs regular games but he won’t be given that until he shows something more. If he’s so promising why not give him a run in the team ffs??

    • Tony says:

agreed he occasionally shows glimpses of real quality, hope he gets a bit of time in the cups soon as a real centre forward and in new year a loan to Hull maybe.

  3. Eric says:

Should be loaned out in Jan

    • Tony says:

If he can get as much game time as Townsend did last year from Jan onwards it could be the making of him.

    • mick says:

needs a loan but maybe they think he is almost ready and want o move him up the ladder with their own group, they have several youngsters of similar age now and maybe they want them to grow together. something like Utd in the early fergie years.

    • lou says:

who can you trust to give him time, harry was ideal but he probably needs premier football.I think Kane might turn out to be a bit special, the club seem to be doing something right at the moment really is a bit like a conveyor belt.

  4. Eric says:

He gives us that physical presence n with Ade leaving soon will prove vital with us competing on all fronts soon

  5. Eric says:

For me both should leave cause we can afford better n also we have kane to be 3/4th striker choice. We now can avail services of better players n we should n that’s y giving Dawson a new contract really baffles me
