Harry’s top four team decimated. Transformation complete!

Posted on September 28, 2013 by Scraggs

Almost eighteen months ago Harry Redknapp had managed to put together a team that was to finish the season in fourth place, reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup and be lauded up until early February as possible title contenders as well as the most exciting team in England. Harry openly stated that Tottenham were then very close to being good enough to win the title itself and would quite conceivably do so within the near future.

We knew that Tottenham had a first team that was up to the task of beating most teams on their day but the squad was not sufficiently good enough, strong enough or deep enough to sustain a challenge or see the season through to any sort of glory. Since that 2011/12 season finished as we all know Harry Redknapp was replaced by AVB, Modric went off to Madrid and Tottenham set about improving the squad.

Since the beginning of 2012 no fewer than fourteen of Redknapp’s squad has departed while Benni and Livermore have also been sent out on loan, fourteen have come in to replace them and the squad and team has been transformed. The likely lineup for today’s fixture with Chelsea could conceivably include just one of the team favoured by Redknapp that season, Kyle Walker.

HARRY REDKNAPP has told Andre Villas-Boas: I’ve left you a squad good enough to win the title.

Younes Kaboul was preferred to Michael Dawson who both remain, Sandro might be ready to return but Parker was the preferred option then, while Aaron Lennon is injured. the only other members of that squad still remaining are Friedel, Gomes, Adebayor, Rose and Defoe.

This as we know was considered to be the strongest Tottenham lineup of the 2011/12 season and was chosen whenever possible and especially for key fixtures;-Tottenham: Friedel; Walker, Kaboul, King, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Modric, Parker, Bale; Van der Vaart; Adebayor. Subs: Cudicini, Defoe, Bassong, Corluka, Livermore, Sandro, Pienaar.

In the space of just fourteen months most everything has changed, AVB has been backed to the hilt with a transfer spend of £165m, what is so amazing about that is the fact that the club has even managed to make a £5m profit as well. no one needs reminding that transfer records tumbled three times, at the end of it all are we any better off? You bet we are with a squad like nobody has ever seen before at Tottenham, most of them young and hungry for success, a squad that is a match for any in the league, including the mega rich clubs.

Harry said Tottenham could win the league within two years and while we won’t hold them to it supporters do believe that they are now genuine contenders for the title and cups. AVB has the whole group playing well and for a position in the team, and after the recent run of three games in six days Tottenham had in effect played three different teams while making upwards of eight changes for each game,  three wins, eight goals scored, no goals conceded, and that included two difficult away fixtures.

Tottenham might fail to beat Chelsea today, they might fail to achieve any of their targets for the season but whatever happens they are living by their motto “To Dare is to Do” and we love them for it.

  1. Eric says:

Harry had a team not a squad n thus we suffered.Everyone knew our starting 11 beforehand and that made our players complacent. He did a wonderful job but we needed someone to take it on from there.

    • grant says:

Loved the way they played and the CL run but still no trophy. AVB is another level and to be honest if he doesn’t bring silverware I will be amazed. A winner. Massive change in a little over a year.

  2. Jide says:

If we can get a good left back, we will win a trophy of some sort. Danny Rose is ok, but Naughton worries me every time he plays. I adore every player that has the honour of putting on. a Spurs shirt, but he is not good enough. He is not comfortable on the ball for some reason. Or I’m I being unfair here?

Yes Harry’s team was fantastic and gave fans a memorable time, but AVB’s team will take Spurs where we deserve to be. Winning trophies.

    • Tony says:

Naughton is no left back, he is helping out there but being so heavily right footed slows things all over the pitch causing problems defensively and offering very little going forward. Rose is far better but another is a must come share the load. Unbelievable transformation to harry’s team in a year! We must support every player who pulls on the shirt and during the game but to have opinion on performance is no bad thing. Yesterday’s result changes nothing as spurs were at least their equals and capable of winning it. they were and still are one of the favourites to win title and so are Spurs still.

  3. Jide says:

Tony, I cannot agree more. Can you (and everyone else) think of a proper left back – preferably British that you think will do a good job for us in January?h

  4. Jide says:

But it seems he wants to join United. Do you see him changing his mind if Man U. continues to struggle in the league? What do you about Luke Shaw, the Saints lad?

    • Tony says:

honestly believe united are average rvp without his goals is nothing but him and rooney are probably the only 2 players any of the top teams would want the rest are no better than ok. no other stars and no standout performers. Probably depends on how well everton are doing to be honest and how much they want.Shaw is just too young at the moment it’s a bit more experience needed.
