Has Levy got one more trick up his sleeve?

Posted on August 31, 2013 by Scraggs

With a little over 48hours left in this transfer window and after spending in excess of £100m too date there remains the belief that Daniel Levy will pull off just one more big deal. Already this has been the most memorable transfer window in Tottenham’s history and there is little doubt that Tottenham and Levy will have been involved in transfer deals totalling well in excess of £200m by close of play on Monday.

Seven fantastic new additions have already been made to the squad and the club’s transfer record has now been broken three times this summer. Seven players have also been struck from the squad  with Gallas and Bentley both out of contract, Livermore loaned out and Dempsey, Parker, Caulker and Huddlestone sold on, the really big deal is imminent now as Bale will soon be sold to Madrid but it might not end there as Adebayor and Benni could also find themselves moved on.

We are now approaching what is commonly known as “Levy time” the last couple of days in a transfer window when he has traditionally pulled a rabbit from the hat and has failed to nail down an essential signing or two due to a lack of time. Things are obviously very different this year as all the major deals have been nailed down already and he will have time to kill once Bale’s transfer has been signed off. The one area that still troubles me is the left back position which is currently limited to just Danny Rose, one of our own and very acceptable, and Benoit Assou-Ekotto a player loved by the Tottenham faithfull but who has in truth lost his form and fitness. Whilst Vertonghen and even the new man Chiriches would both be great stand ins if needed and Zeki Fryers is coming along well, it does seem to remain the one area not catered for with a true top class specialist in that position.

A certain left back at Real Madrid has stated that he wishes to leave the club and apparently would prefer a Champions League qualifier, as yet there has been no mention of interest from other parties and no word of talks elsewhere and my guess is that the powers that be will eventually convince Coentrao that Tottenham is the place to be.

Of course the one big surprise could yet be that Gareth Bale goes nowhere, what are the odds?

I would prefer to sign baines… Why not? …..make a proper 18m bid…. Best left back in the league by far. I am more worried about right back position….walker looks really dodgy. He doesn’t seem to have learned how to read the game. Players constantly get around the back. Not sure about him.

would totally agree on baines but it will be United or nobody for him i think. As far as Walker is concerned he still can improve and cut out odd error but some of his defensive stats last season were amazing, under AVB he has improved to become one of the very best but still has that odd cock up in his DNA. Only 23 and loads more to come, already better defensively than Glen johnson.
