Has Mourinho lost the plot? Chelsea were outplayed by the best team.

Having watched last nights Supercup I have to admit that it was a fairly thrilling game with some excellent football played by both teams, both giving their all for the cause and so it made for excellent viewing.

Just over a year ago the same two teams met in the final of the Champions League when both teams were led by different coaches, on that occasion Bayern outplayed Chelsea missing chance after chance and even a penalty along the way before Chelsea finally won the tie and took home the trophy.

Last night was a very similar scenario only this time both clubs had new coaches with Pep Guardiola now leading Bayern and Jose Mourinho ┬áback at Chelsea, again the German club took the game to Chelsea and produced wave after wave of attacks most stemming from the brilliance of Frank Ribery. Chelsea put up a strong defiant performance and scored two top quality goals but mourinho’s after match comment that the best team lost was quite cringeworthy bearing in mind the statistics surrounding the match and what we had all witnessed.

Of course it was hard to take in view of a marvelous rearguard action for most of the game and having scored the two standout goals of the game, but to argue over the sending off, which could have easily been a straight red rather than second yellow, and to suggest that Chelsea played most of the match with ten men when Ramires was dismissed in the eighty-fifth minute was embarrassing.

The statistics point to almost total domination by Bayern who enjoyed almost 70% possession even more territorial advantage, about three times as many passes, shots, dribbles and crosses. It was as dominating a performance as you could see and whilst it was a great rearguard action from Chelsea with some impressive breakout moments, to suggest that the best team lost would be madness.

Mourinho seemed helpless and unable to turn the tide with any of the players he had on the bench, as we have said before his squad seems unbalanced and most unlike his preferred set up during his heyday when he was winning for fun, gone are the Makalele/Essien type players at the heart of his midfield, instead he has more lightweight pretenders like Oscar, Hazard, Schurrle,Lampard and Ramirez on the night but with Mata, Willian, De Bruyne, Moses and Van Ginkel as other alternatives. Chelsea still have Essien and Mikel who might have helped stem the endless flow of Bayern attacks  but it is unlikely that there will be room in the squad for them.

The Chelsea squad as with all other premiership clubs can only name 17 players not of British descent, with so many creative midfield players to include as well as their latest couple of recruits from Anzhi it does seem that Mourinho is abandoning his own beliefs and is trying to comply with Abramovitch and so will probably fail miserably. Most expected Chelsea to be City’s main challenger for the title, myself included, but the transfer window has been strange for Mourinho leaving him with a rather squad which seems a little on the light side rather than powerful during the glory years.

At the moment the power seems to on the blue side of North London and belong to the squad led by the pretender/would be heir apparent AVB.
