Sentimentality holding Tottenham back!

Posted on September 05, 2014 by Eddie S

It is probably fair to say that a huge number of Tottenham supporters were disappointed with the clubs dealings in the recently ended transfer market, strange when you consider that they were soon moaning about too many signings during the summer of 2013. Even the fact that the six signings that were made were all sensible and to areas of the team where it was most needed once the window closed the knives came out for Levy and Baldini rather than Pochettino.

Much of the anger has been directed at the decision to allow the departures of Michael Dawson, Sandro and Lewis Holtby who were all loved by the majority of our fanbase for their dedication and wholehearted displays. Hard as it is to accept by many but for more than a couple of seasons the pace and ability of Michael Dawson has been questioned by us all and for the majority a central defender was on the wishlist at the beginning of the window, well we got two.

As regards Sandro at the beginning of the AVb era he was locked in as the central midfielder alongside Moussa Dembele as they ran the show against the majority, I still believe that the injury to Sandro at Loftus Road was the turning point to a season that saw us gain a record points total but one short of fourth placed Arsenal, at that time he was that important.
Unfortunately many supporters have failed to see him reproduce anything like that form and neither did our last three coaches.
I still believe there was a place in the squad for Lewis Holtby had he decided to fight it out but credit where credit is due he wants to play and probably left for that reason.
The reaction to the departures of these three players has been more than a little hypocritical, none were considered first choice by the majority and so the decision was made to change things around.
I find the situation a little like that with the England international team, we have entertained players that have failed for far to many years rather than bring in replacements with hunger, let’s be honest the likes of Lampard, Gerrard, Terry and Beckham deciding when they will retire from International duty is a joke, the coach tells them!
I believe that Tottenham have also been suffering from the same problem to some extent, the great Ledley King suffered for years from serious injury but not until we signed Vertonghen did we actually replace him, it’s been the same with Dawson and probably others like Lennon and Kaboul, but if Pochettino thinks he can get the best from them as members of his squad who are we to argue.
Pochettino has shown that sentiment will not come into it where he is concerned, 3 much loved players have departed for football reasons alone, he wanted Schneiderlin but rather than wait around until the next transfer window or the one after he has an alternative with Stambouli.
Our new Head Coach isn’t about to put his neck on the line by being sentimental, if Dawson, Sandro and Holtby can be moved on then shape up or face being shipped out is the clear message he is sending.
