Holtby staying, Gomes going and Gaurin a no go.

On what has been another slow day some news has leaked out from individuals which has given us something to report on, firstly the good news, apparently Lewis Holtby’s girlfriend has finally moved to London to join the player and unless a surprise £20m bid from Arsenal or Chelsea is about to be lodged then it seems certain that he will be remaining with Tottenham for the foreseeable future. With the news that one of the fans favourites is seemingly set to stay one of their favourites from a few years back, Huerelho Gomes, is off to his old club PSV Eindhoven to resurrect his career.

Although there has been talk of Lewis Holtby being allowed to leave the club since before the transfer period opened it has mostly been speculation, nothing concrete has actually transpired and Tottenham have continued to include him in squads when fit and have involved him in behind closed doors games to  help regain match fitness, of course a dramatic last ditch offer of significant proportion might still tempt Daniel Levy but for the moment he remains with Tottenham and there remains the expectation that he will be one of our stars of the future.

Gomes was of course a star when we bought him and for the first couple of seasons he was much loved by the Tottenham faithful and his first season in particular was special as Tottenham achieved Champions League qualification, Brad Friedel eventually replaced him and as we all know he is probably the most consistent and reliable keeper of the modern era and was unlikely to give up his position, that was until a younger more mobile Hugo Lloris arrived. Gomes managed to feature in 97 games for Tottenham so it is a shame he never got the chance to clock up his 100.

Since before AVB moved on Tottenham have been linked with Fredy Guarin of Inter Milan, for some reason there have been links to Chelsea and Man United seemingly in an attempt to draw Tottenham or another buyer in for a player that Inter clearly no longer want. The media continue to talk up the move to Tottenham for some unknown reason yet by my reckoning Tottenham currently have in their first team squad no less than ten central midfielders and the likelihood of wanting or needing to invest another £10m or so on another makes no sense whatsoever. Had the rumours surrounded a left back or forward it would be understandable but buying Gaurin does not and never has been a realistic option in our opinion.

The countdown to the end of another winter transfer window continues but it very much looks like it will be like most others, no exciting new additions with only the likelihood of a short term temporary response to the departing Jermain Defoe a real possibility.
