How do Tottenham compare to other top 4 contenders.

Posted on January 20, 2017 by Random Spurs Supporter

Reluctantly some in the media are beginning to finally acknowledge that Tottenham now form one of a group referred to as “The Big 6”. The days of the Sky 4 that reigned for so long is now long gone, that gang of 4 was broken up by Tottenham in the days of Redknapp, Bale and Modric, from there the vast wealth of Manchester City enabled them to break into the mix and they took over for a period as they cherry picked the best players, that included plenty from one of their nearest competitors Arsenal and even neighbours Manchester United.

Last season though Tottenham finished in 3rd position they were the last challengers to Leicester in the race for the title and once the dream disappeared inexperience and disappointment kicked in allowing Arsenal to overtake them in the final run in.

Though Pochettino’s squad started relatively slowly they still maintained the longest unbeaten run in the division, even now just two league defeats suggests that Tottenham have maintained a steely determination and a reluctance to roll over and they have already beaten two of the favourites for the title.

Now sitting second in the table rather than compare players like for like it maybe better that we judge Tottenham as a team which is what they are in the truest sense. Defensively they have proven themselves to be as good as even the best in the Premier League, in fact as of this moment they have conceded the least amount of any club. As important as the keeper and whichever defensive setup Pochettino chooses the defensive cover afforded by the monster that is Victor Wanyama, the ever impressive Mousa Dembele and young gun Harry Winks when called upon is vital.

Though Danny Rose and Kyle Walker are predominantly fullbacks no matter whether it’s a back 4 or 3 they still offer so much going forward, they’re statistics and performance suggests exactly what they are, 2 of the very best in the division and vital to the team.

Offensively let’s not beat about the bush, Harry Kane is currently the Golden Boot holder and so the most prolific goalscorer in the country, after a slow start and injury he is once again up and running and chasing down the strikers just ahead of him. Dele Alli, still only 20 yrs of age, isn’t a great midfielder right now but he is currently one of the most vital Tottenham players, a constant goal threat, with ten goals to his credit already, creative, pacy and hardworking. Christian Eriksen has also hit a rich vein of form with goals and assists flowing, he is once again the heart of the team and conducts them.

Pundits and media experts now acknowledge that Tottenham are probably the main danger to Chelsea in their pursuit of the title though there is always a “but”, if they suffer injuries to key players like Kane and Alderweireld forgetting they we already have for a couple of months in each case and still remain in contention. No depth, yet with Lamela and Vertonghen to return from injury at some point, Sissoko, Son, Trippier, Davies, Winks and Wimmer ready and able to step in and even Janssen and N Koudou should not be so easily dismissed just yet.

Every Tottenham supporter is crying out for success and that means a trophy but the reality is that Champions League participation remains a vital target to ensure retention of our best players & to attract quality new additions. From a financial and projection aspect Champions League involvement remains essential if we are to keep up or even close the gap to the wealthiest.

To sum up it is clear that Tottenham are currently a match for the very best in the country, they are contenders for every trophy on offer and I am very content with that at the moment.
