How the transfer season turned against Tottenham.

Posted on August 05, 2013 by Scraggs

Just for once it seemed as though the transfer window was going to be one of relative tranquility for Tottenham, they snapped up Paulinho early on and had apparently laid the foundations for Chadli and Soldado to join well before the end of July. With those three signings most supporters would have been happy if nothing else happened and Tottenham went into the season as they were.

Then it all seemed to turn on it’s head, first the joke headlines from Marca, which were all taken up by the British media, appeared to take effect, what had been laughable for weeks suddenly seemed to take on a ring of truth as Bale’s head finally turned. From being at the forefront of all things Tottenham he suddenly took a back seat in Hong Kong, he didn’t train or take part in the two matches or promote Tottenham or himself in any way, the alarm bells started to ring and are becoming louder and louder as the devious world of Real Madrid seems to have overcome him. That particular scenario still has some way to play and ever more demands and fees to capture the headlines.

About a week ago news started to circulate that Tottenham were about to buy a young Romanian centre back of enormous ability and potential, his agent and his club stated that the deal was 99% completed and only required a medical and the players signature and he would become Tottenham’s player, at the same time Steven Caulker was heading to Cardiff to sign for them as it seems that he wanted regular first team action which AVB could not guarantee with Vertonghen well ahead of him in the pecking order.

As if things were not disappointing enough the imprisoned owner of Steaua Bucharest prevented the sale of Vlad Chiriches and soon after Michael Dawson picked up an injury in training requiring a scan and might yet turn out to be relatively serious, Kaboul is still not ready to go and so the friendly against Monaco resulted in a central defensive pairing of Jake Livermore and Zeki Fryers, up against three offensive players costing in total about £120m the end result was pretty obvious.

So here we are less than two weeks before the season starts with only three central defenders, all injured, Our top player and goalscorer from last season likely to be heading to Spain, Clint Dempsey sold to Seattle Sounders, Caulker to Cardiff, Defoe possibly injured or on his way to another club depending what report you read, and Adebayor failing to travel to Monaco for “personal reasons”make of that what you will. There are still three huge plusses of course as Soldado is the type of centre forward Tottenham have needed since Berbatov left, a goalscorer of the highest calibre with goals as his main aim when he steps onto the field. Paulinho and Chadli will also bring goals and dynamism from midfield.

Up until a week ago it all looked rosy as far as Tottenham supporters were concerned, since then whilst not total doom and gloom there can be no doubt that their hopes have taken a big hit, the next several days in particular and the entire transfer window will now become the same as many others before, a race against time and untold negotiations to bring in players to ensure the work done so far is not wasted for another season.
