How will Sherwood set Tottenham up for City test.

Posted on January 28, 2014 by Scraggs

By the time Tottenham step out onto the pitch on Wednesday evening they might well have the chance to strengthen their position in relation to the teams around them, close the gap on the teams at the top and perhaps even make the top four position their own for a while at least. Tomorrow Arsenal have a difficult trip to Southampton while one or both of Liverpool and Everton will lose points as they face each other in what will be a crucial fixture.

Whatever happens is beyond the control of Tim Sherwood but he will still have the opportunity to extract some revenge from one of the teams that  humiliated Tottenham with that 6-0 thrashing, though the performance on that occasion was awful it had much to do with horrendous mistakes by individuals rather than the superiority of City. Most would be of the opinion that Manchester City are the form team of the moment and have the most impressive attack in the country, as borne out from the number of goals scored so far, but not that far behind is Tim Sherwood’s Tottenham,  also now finding the net with some regularity. At stake is the opportunity for Tottenham to make their mark in the race at the top and for the current coaching set up to lay claim to the job beyond the end of the season, if they can lead these player into the Champions League then nobody could deny them the opportunity to carry on next season.

Both City and Tottenham have chosen to play with a 4 4 2 formation in most recent fixtures and it has served them both well, but while City have a strike force that was put together to complement such a system Tottenham set about creating a squad that complimented the ideas of AVB and a single striker. As was clear from the FA Cup tie with Arsenal their five man midfield easily trumped our four and the extra striker was rendered useless and simply not up to the job. Against Swansea, a team that plays with five in midfield and passes the opposition to death Tim changed tact and matched them in midfield and brought Eriksen in from the left into his favoured, more advanced role, in the centre and in the view of many observers this resulted in one of Tottenham’s best performances of the season.

City are unlikely to change their system and this leaves Tim Sherwood with a decision to make, does he go like for like in a straight shootout? or does he retain the system that was so impressive last time out and which would be supplemented by the return of some big players from injury? Bentaleb or Paulinho? Townsend, Chadli, Sigurdsson or Lennon out wide? and just who should Vertonghen replace as he must surely play in the centre?

This is a big game and any sort of result could galvanize the team into believing that they could achieve bigger things this season, the depth of squad and quality is there to do well this season and in all honesty they should not fear any team even City and especially not Chelsea and Arsenal or any of the other teams battling it out for a top four place. My opinion is that the team should be set up in a similar fashion to the Swansea game with maybe two or three changes involving the return of Vertonghen, Paulinho and perhaps Townsend if sufficiently fit, how could anyone not have been impressed with Eriksen in his role ahead of Dembele and Bentaleb and wish to see it persevered with?

So for me it would have to be 4 5 1 which would allow Eriksen to play centrally taking him away from the firing line on the flanks where City are so strong, Rose and Townsend down the left and Walker and Lennon on the right could and should have the upper hand in terms of pace in those areas while Dembele and Paulinho will be a decent match up with Toure and Fernandinho. In central defence for me it would have to be Vertonghen and Chiriches as unfortunately Kaboul is not ready and sadly might never again be up to the rigours of a Premiership season again.

So that’s it, for me it would be the same system as that used against Swansea with the return of a couple of the big name players. Surprisingly after all the disappointments in terms of results, some performances and even the appointment of Sherwood it has to be said, there is a growing belief that Tottenham have the playing staff and the ability to beat City tomorrow and the other teams ahead and around us in the coming weeks.

Win lose or draw a decent performance tomorrow is imperative and a point or three would be  most welcome.
