How will Spurs lineup v Stoke?

Posted on December 28, 2013 by Scraggs

Three games into the Tim Sherwood project and his Tottenham team have won, lost and drawn, scored in every game but also conceded goals and more worryingly been far to open and offered the opposition too many goalscoring opportunities. Will we see Sherwood tweak the team tactics or simply change personnel for what has now become a vital fixture, will he pick a defensive midfielder to give some protection to a back four that was far too exposed against WBA.

With Kyle Walker picking up his fifth booking on Boxing Day we shall be missing his services for the first time this season, with his absence where will the width come from if Lennon fails to recover from injury? the rest of the defence picks itself at the moment with Vertonghen and Kaboul still recovering from knocks. Naughton will come in while Danny Rose will continue his impressive form on the other flank and Dawson and Chiriches will take up positions in the centre.

Paulinho is once again available after suspension and adds another possibility to the midfield options and then he has to decide whether to persist with Chadli or Lamela on the right. In central midfield the choices so far have been Dembele and Sigurdsson, Dembele and Eriksen and finally Holtby and Eriksen, that’s three games , three combinations and none have really worked. The chances are that we shall see another combination take to the field against Stoke tomorrow, which should be a surprise as we we informed that Sherwood knew the players and the club from top to bottom yet can’t decide on the combination that best compliments the team.

Will Sherwood persist with the two strikers up front ? I would guess that we are likely to see more of the same tomorrow although I have to question whether it is really working, he has named two strikers but they don’t play together or actually benefit one another, Defoe and Soldado have both produced crosses from wide areas to create a goal for Adebayor but there have been precious few signs of any interplay between them that we see all too often up at City for example. Perhaps we would be better served with the one striker and a creative force or two busting a gut to play in and around him, be it Paulinho, Eriksen or even Lamela┬áthis would then allow the defensive midfield option that we so desperately need to be chosen to help shore things up at the back and protect our back four.

On this occasion we won’t try to second guess Tim Sherwood’s selection for tomorrow but simply supply our own hoped for lineup and one that we believe might also be capable of putting up a decent show at Old Trafford and the Emirates, subject of course to the return of some of the injured members of the squad returning in time to boost the team.

Something needs to change as the team has been left far too exposed in each the games in which Sherwood has been involved, does anybody actually believe that we should persist without a defensive midfielder? if there is no room in the lineup at the moment for Capoue what chance Sandro being chosen when fit. The introduction of Capoue for either of the midfield options should not be dismissed as that would allow the man alongside him more freedom to venture forward and either him or Sandro will be a must in the following two fixtures.

Everyone will be saying it’s only Stoke just like when we faced the Hammers in the cup and WBA the other day, but Sherwood has got to start choosing his teams with a bit of structure about them because there has been no evidence of that yet.

For me the season was over the day we sacked Avb.Only looking forward to next season with a mid table finish this season

    • Tony says:

Still can’t get to grips with it, out of one cup, fa cup next and nothing much to play for. AVB must have walked there can be no other explanation as no plan in place. stabbed in the back by Sherwood and co who will pay themselves come the summer. All these so called experts having an opinion on sherwood and his coaching ability is just ridiculous, he has no badges and absolutely no track record of doing the job so how exactly can they pass judgement. I really cannot understand how Levy has got himself into this mess, he has picked the short straw this time and destroyed the season.

just seen the team and the pace and wing play of Eriksen will be new to us. pleased to see Dembele alongside Paulinho. for some reason spurs supporters haven’t taken to the Brazilian but I don’t see the problem once he starts converting chances. Should be less open but still think Lamela and Eriksen around Soldado would be a far mor creative option. should win but if they do it will be nothing to brag about or cling to for the rest of the season.

  3. Tom says:

Don’t like to say told you so but Paulinho has been amazing today, bit of strength in midfield makes all the difference, still like to see Lamela on for Lennon, decent game but still no end product, so far!
