How will Tottenham improve their team next season?

Posted on May 01, 2013 by Scraggs

Already Tottenham have, arguably, seven players guaranteed to start in their strongest team next season and many of these would be candidates for most teams, obviously there are players out there that could be considered perhaps a little better, but the cost would be prohibitive, even if they were available, and they would actually bring only a little more to the table.

Just to run through the players that most Tottenham supporters would choose lets start at the back.

1.Hugo Lloris is proving to be a great purchase and has performed admirably even though he has only been in this league for just a few months. A keeper with great reflexes and speed off his line, also able to read play and cut out danger before it has a chance to evolve. Now  I am not saying that he is the best but I cannot think of a single keeper worth buying who might be an improvement upon him and that includes Joe Hart.

2.Jan Vertonghen is proving to be a great acquisition and an able replacement for one Ledley King. Another in his first season in the Premiership and has become a firm favourite with everybody connected with Tottenham. Vertonghen is a player of immense class and ability who will only improve over the coming seasons, able to play in a number of positions simply because he is technically brilliant. A possible future captain, Vertonghen has already brought goals and assists to the proceedings and has also brought a hunger, determination and will to win to the squad.

3.Younes Kaboul has been very unfortunate this season in that he suffered a bad injury in the first game and has still to return to the fray. Based upon his ability last season when he was probably second only to Vincent Kompany in his defensive duties, provided he returns to full fitness next season he will be a certain starter alongside Vertonghen. Kaboul has taken his time to reach his potential and even though he is in his second spell at the club he has always been a favourite of the fans. Great in the air, very quick, strong and another with a huge will to win. He has all the attributes to still go on to be one of the very best around and was not that far away last season.

4.Kyle Walker might well be a controversial choice as he has been known to make the odd error and they have generally cost the team points, but, he is still a novice and very young but under the guidance of AVB has this season improved his defensive side of the game, because of this my belief is that he has had to quell his attacking tendency a little and has therefore appeared to supporters to have had a mixed season. Walker probably has more hunger and desire than most other players and leaves absolutely everything on the pitch. So with vastly improving defensive abilities, more controlled attacking and pace second to none he is in my view already one of the best around.

5.Sandro, he has always been a fans favourite and whenever he gets a decent run in the team becomes a key ingredient. Last season he probably deserved more action although it was hard to oust Scott Parker, but once he was injured Sandro came in and Tottenham went on another good run of results. this season AVB clearly saw his ability and he was one of the first names on the teamsheet and rightly so, since his injury Tottenham have lost much of their belief and results and performances have dropped off. As defensive midfielders go he is one of the very best around and will remain a certain starter next season whatever formation the team plays.

6.Moussa Dembele has become along with Sandro a rock in central midfield, in tandem they probably had the some of the best statistics around  and were able to dominate most midfields. Powerful and quick with the ability to ghost past 2 or 3 players and take the game to the opposition. As an offensive player there are very few better and if he should add more goals to his game then he could go on to great things.

7.Gareth Bale, not much more can be said about him really and as only 23yrs of age there is still much much more to come. Started out as a leftback of tremendous ability, then a leftwinger and now able to player anywhere across midfield or up front. No matter what position he is played in he has goals in him with either foot or with his head. Pace, stamina strength and great technique he can become anything he wants. fortunately Tottenham have in AVB a coach able to get the best from this great asset.

For me personally it would be very easy to add Aaron Lennon to that list as he has always been a key ingredient to the team, in the past it has been levelled at him that he cannot create chances or score enough goals, this season under AVB both assists and goals have increased and my only concern now is that he has injury issues, probably brought about by the way he plays and the treatment dished out to him. I do know that when he is not available for any length of time the team generally suffers.

So to answer the question how will Tottenham improve the team the answer is obvious to us all in that a couple of forwards will be needed as well as a specialist leftback together with a player similar to Lennon to challenge and/or step in when injured.

Tottenham do have a number of players already who might well step up next season, Danny Rose and Andros Townsend come to mind as well as Tom Carroll, others that the supporters still have huge expectations of include Holtby, Caulker and Sigurdsson.

Look around this Tottenham squad and add 2 or 3 of the right ingredients and they will be ready to challenge at the very top. Once Tottenham would be envious of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, City and United, they all had even fringe players that would walk into a Tottenham team but that is changing, there is envy still of some of the attacking talent at United and City and a certain suarez of Liverpool but little else. This squad is closing the gap and with the expected additions this summer could be more than a match.
