How will Tottenham line up next week?

Posted on August 11, 2013 by Random Spurs Supporter

Although much will depend on what happens while the players are away on International duty this week, provided none of the Tottenham squad pick up any injuries and they all return relatively fresh and ready for the big kick off my own guess is that the first fixture at Crystal Palace will see the following team take to the field:-

Goalkeeper- absolutely no doubt that Hugo Lloris is the man between the sticks, possibly still slightly rusty and needs to be a little sharper but that is what pre-season is for. A top keeper and perfect behind a defence playing a high line.

Defence-On the right Kyle Walker has made the position his own, quite possibly the best right back in the division now that he has improved the defensive side of his game, he is still prone to making the odd mistake but he is still young in terms of experience and will continue to improve. His pace will be vitally important to help protect Michael Dawson who should start alongside him, he has almost everything needed of a central defender other than speed. Somehow I expect that Jan Vertonghen will actually win his fitness battle and take his place in the team, he will have missed out on some conditioning but his intelligence and reading of the game will enable him to slot straight in and do his job. Danny Rose seems odds on to start at left back as there has been no sign that Assou-Ekotto is ready or even likely to regain his position.

Midfield- It is not entirely certain what formation will be utilised as the players available make for a very fluid transition to whichever system suits the circumstance. I expect at this point that it will be exactly how the team lined up yesterday with Lennon and Chadli on opposite flanks and Paulinho, Sigurdsson and Dembele more central and interchanging, up top will be Soldado who really could be something special judging from yesterdays showing.

At some point soon Kaboul will reclaim his top billing from Dawson and Sandro will become more involved and alternate with others in the midfield engine room and at some point Holtby, once fit, and Tom Carroll will compete for  a spot centrally.

It is not clear what is holding up the Capoue deal, some say it is bonuses due to him from his current club while others have indicated late interest from Atletico Madrid which he wishes to investigate, if he does complete his move then he just might start in place of Vertonghen, or take that holding midfield position for this fixture and allow Paulinho and Dembele a more advanced role.

Relatively happy with all aspects of the team at this point but injuries and the sale of Caulker has left the defensive unit needing to work especially hard, especially at set pieces.

The first fixture is no forgone conclusion, it comes at a time when all promoted teams are on a high and believe that they are invincible. Holloway will have Crystal Palace fired up and ready to run through brick walls for this encounter, a banana skin of a fixture as they often say.
