How will Tottenham lineup against Swansea?

Posted on January 18, 2014 by Guest Writer

The early kick off on Sunday will most likely have us playing catch up against some of the teams ahead of us with Chelsea and Everton fixtures still to follow later that day and Monday night respectively. As we get to this stage of the season every game counts and dropping two or three points just ramps more and more pressure on us and we know from past experience that we do not seem to be able to handle it too well. We live in hope that the teams that play later today somehow falter, though the odds are against that happening, though if they or any of the teams fighting for that elusive Champions League do slip it is essential that Tottenham take advantage of the situation.

Taking on a Swansea team that is under performing by most experts reckoning must be taken seriously, they have the players to hurt even the best teams on their day, their ball retention in every fixture and over the course of the season is up there with the very best. It is certain that Swansea will operate with five men in midfield and retain plenty of the ball and so it is going to be interesting to see how Tim Sherwood sets up his team on this occasion.

As more of his squad of players regain fitness so the team performances should improve but there remains the dilemma of formation. we are led to believe that Sandro, Lamela and Sigurdsson are once again available for selection, there are mixed reports surrounding Andros Townsend who might or might not have aggravated his old injury when playing the first half of the U21 game against Newcastle depending upon which report you read, Kaboul and Vertonghen have returned to training but are not yet ready to take part while Kyle Walker is definitely out for this one after suffering an injury against Palace.

This seems to be another one of those fixtures that cries out for a five man midfield to counteract the strength of the opposition and it might be interesting to see Sandro sitting behind Dembele and Bentaleb to start, or perhaps the partnership that was on the losing side just the once last season, Sandro and Dembele, with Lamela being given the free role that Gareth Bale so enjoyed last season.

I expect most of us are looking forward to the time that sees the return of Vertonghen, Townsend and Paulinho as all three would surely feature in our strongest lineup along with Dembele, Lloris, Walker and Rose, some might also add Lennon and Sandro to that equation, another central defender will need to be added and somebody to score the goals as well as create them.

Somehow, apart from Naughton for Walker, I have a feeling that it might be same again on Sunday which might not be good for morale, Tottenham have such a large squad of quality players all eager to get their chance in a World Cup year that Sherwood might actually be missing a trick, players given their chance knowing that they have to produce the goods to remain in the team might actually raise the bar going into the crucial ending to the season, that and retaining match fitness for if and when needed as well as allowing players to rest and recuperate so as to give their very best rather than fatigued performances as was the case in the Redknapp years.

It’s going to be interesting to see if Sherwood really does have other options and abilities as this is a weekend to ensure that a bigger gap to the top four does not occur, Manchester City are next weeks opponents and we don’t need the added pressure of having to win that game to remain in touch. Over to you Tim and the team, make it happen and make us proud.

  1. Tom says:

I would like to see a 5 man midfield for this one with Lennon and Townsend playing the wide areas with Capoue or Sandro as defensive midfielder as well as Bembele and either Bentaleb, Erikseen or perhaps even Lamela with the freedom to get forward. Up front i would actually go with Soldado as he seems to offer much more to the players around him but it seems Adebayor KNOWS he is playing every game.
