Is 2 goal Welbeck the answer for Tottenham?

Posted on June 14, 2013 by Eddie S

Tottenham seem keen on a loan of Danny Welbeck in order to address the lack of goals from the two Tottenham strikers Adebayor and Defoe last season, Welbeck’s tally was an impressive two from thirty-nine appearances for the best team in England. Surely we are not about to return to the Berbatov scenario when United snapped him up for a fee of over £30m and loaned us Frazier Campbell to compensate.

United seem to think that a loan to a top six club would be beneficial for both the player and themselves in the long run, helping him to learn and progress without harming their position until he is ready to feature for them again. While Tottenham are working at improving their player until such time as he has improved sufficiently to return to them, United hope to have Van Persie, Rooney, Hernandez and Lewandowski as their own strike force for the coming season.

In the words of Catherine Tate’s old lady sketch “What a f…..g liberty”. Obviously Tottenham would have to pay for this privilege as well as pay his wages and at the end of the season once AVB and his staff have done their job he might be available at a hugely enhanced fee or actually return to the United squad.

The simple answer to the question is obviously NO! Tottenham are perfectly capable of finding their own potential and transforming them for their own benefit and in this particular transfer window they are actually looking for the finished article capable of scoring 20 goals for them this season.

There is one other significant point that United might like to note and that is Tottenham, the club, the coach and the players no longer see themselves as just a top six team, with the right additions and with so many top players in the squad already including, possibly, the 3rd best player in Europe in Gareth Bale, if the right players are added then based on Tottenham’s form over the final 6months of the season, with the benefit of the continuity AVB has brought Tottenham actually expect to push much nearer to the top of the table this coming season.

Personally I am quite pleased that nobody expects much more from Tottenham this coming season, however, with the benefit of a decent pre-season and the return of a couple of stars from long injuries, even without any new players it is not difficult to expect that the squad is capable of improving on the points tally of last season, with 2 or 3 shrewd additions and the extra years experience working with AVB this might be the year when everything finally comes together.

Harry Redknapp said 18months ago that the squad assembled was capable of winning the league in the next couple of years, Jose Mourinho also recently tipped them to be challengers and even Alex Ferguson had admitted on a couple of occasions that Tottenham were becoming something of a threat. Tottenham already have Lloris, Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Sandro, Dembele, Lennon and Bale all capable of playing for most of the best teams in Europe, Tottenham also have a good number of other players in the squad capable of joining that group and plenty of youngsters coming through, Daniel Levy seems set to spend another huge sum on improving the squad and whilst it might not be supplemented by a huge sale like last year with Modric, it does seem at last that he has a coach in AVB that he trusts and who does actually seem to be a cut above most and will go on to become one of the greats.
