Is Hulk the missing link in AVB’s plans?

Posted on August 06, 2013 by Tony

Tottenham seem to be continuously linked to Hulk because of his close association with Andre Villas-Boas and quite probably the best and most successful season of his entire career when together at Porto, a season which led to four trophies, goals galore, excitement and no defeats.

The thought of a player like Hulk joining Tottenham has always been a pipe dream simply because his market value is enormous and beyond the realms of Tottenham, well that has been the case up until now as suddenly he might be up for grabs after all. Tottenham seem set to come into money and lots of it while Hulk is going through a poor run of form and things do not seem to be going well for him in Russia. With the World Cup finals coming up in Brazil in less than a year from now the player will be exremely anxious to retain form and score the goals to ensure his place in the Brazilian squad and lineup.

Suddenly many things begin to make sense in trying to bring in Hulk if Gareth Bale departs, the player is probably worth less than at any time in the past few years, although still a significant fee he cannot be worth more than the £40m when he left Porto and arguably £35m is nearer the mark, Tottenham might soon see that as a comfortable sum to pay to replace their talisman and the goals he supplied last season.

AVB and Hulk would probably see it as a fantastic opportunity for them both as there is little doubt they were good for each other, AVB brought out the very best of Hulk, as he did with Bale and others, while Hulk could well become the missing link in a 4 3 3 formation and contribute goals and assists as he did in that fantastic season. For AVB a trophy and Champions League football come the end of the season, goals and a great season for Hulk ensuring his place in the starting lineup for Brazil, and for Tottenham a ready made replacement for Gareth Bale and the best part of £65m still left over from the two deals.

You would have to say that a 4 3 3 formation which would have expected to see Bale operating on the right suddenly looks none too shabby if the lineup looked like this:- Lloris, Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Coentrao,Paulinho, Sandro, Dembele,Hulk, Soldado, Chadli, with a very respectable bench that would include Lennon,Holtby,Carroll, Sigurdsson, Dawson, Rose, Townsend, possibly Defoe and Adebayor as well as another central defender and cover for Walker, be it Naughton or another.

Hulk did not in my opinion have an impressive Confederations Cup but he is clearly a talent and is still relatively young, he has work to do to cement his place at the World Cup and working with AVB who knows how to get the best from him might be the perfect answer for all concerned.

You could be right. Players don’t just suddenly get crap. Russia might just be a bit uninspiring for the Brazilian.
