Is it time for Pochettino to add to his squad?

Posted on January 15, 2017 by Scraggs

Coming up to the midway point in the transfer window the question frequently asked by most Spurs supporters and the general media outlets is whether should Pochettino look to bolster his squad this month. There is little doubt that the current squad is strong and that there is a very strong nucleus of players that he has to choose from, the Spurs manager already has the players to more than match almost any team, but there are currently a couple of probable weaknesses should injuries strike.

It is doubtful that many would currently argue that Christian Eriksen is our most creative player and crucial to how Poch wants the team to play and currently there is nobody in the squad quite like him. Most hope that Marcus Edwards might become the creative genius that makes the team tick but he is one for the future, right now nobody could replicate just what Eriksen does and that to many Spurs supporters is an area that perhaps should be addressed.

Quite how you attract a player that fits the bill is hard to explain as who could be attracted to join the fight to earn a position in the first team knowing that they do so to play second fiddle initially. If we go for a player in the latter stages of their career it is difficult to see how they might cope with the extreme work rate demanded by Pochettino & if it’s to be a youngster then surely we have plenty in the development squad to call upon.

Even more difficult is finding somebody to replace Harry Kane should he once again be unavailable for any prolonged period. We have already experienced that scenario for several weeks and though the team never once rolled over & maintained our league challenge they did suffer in the Champions League and we could and probably would have been much closer to Chelsea.

Nobody yet knows whether Pochettino has given up on Vincent Janssen, only time will tell, but he has struggled with the opportunities handed to him so far. Maybe it might be easier to bring in an experienced striker looking for one last swan song, many have suggested Jermaine Defoe and though not a bad call perhaps Shane Long might be a better option as he fits the teams style a little more readily.

Tottenham are not renowned for spending big in the January transfer window although there has been the odd exception, this window has been more about picking up younger talent with an eye to the future, Dele Alli and Shilow Tracey for example.

Mauricio Pochettino has said on more than one occasion that he is not averse to bringing in the right player in this window if that player became available. There is no reason to doubt him but he will absolutely ensure that first and foremost any new addition will not upset the balance or team spirit within the group.
