Is it time to start Lamela?

Posted on September 30, 2013 by Tony

Andros Townsend has come into the Tottenham team this season and has produced some fantastic performances, he has had the edge over every fullback he has faced and played a major part in team performances, but there is a problem. Townsend has had more shots this season than any other player but has yet to score a league goal, his accuracy is not in question but it is fair to say that most efforts have been from outside the box. Considering how much possession he has had and with so much advantage over opposing defenders in five appearances and 390 minutes on the pitch he has only created 7 chances, not bad but perhaps more should be expected of him, take Aaron Lennon for example who with just a single appearance created 3 chances and each of them from the byline.

The other alternative on the right is record signing Erik Lamela, AVB is handling the youngster with care and allowing him time to settle into his new surroundings, he is the only player in the squad who doesn’t yet speak English and he is being carefully integrated into the group.

Time for Lamela to make his mark.

Time for Lamela to make his mark.

Lamela has been used sparingly in the league and has only made a few brief appearances from the bench but in 44 minutes on the pitch and from the bench he has created 2 chances with one leading to the winning goal at Cardiff, his other appearance for the team was the full 90 minutes against Tromso and another chance and assist created.

Tottenham brought in Roberto Soldado at great expense to score the goals needed to take Tottenham to the next level, he is clearly a striker of immense quality, rarely caught offside and able to find space in the busiest penalty box, Townsend has had the beating of his opposite number but has yet get to the byline and deliver as often as he should whereas Lamela has the extra quality to deliver chances. Soldado needs the ball delivered earlier and into the right areas and sometimes from the byline, do that and he will do his job, AVB must pick the team and ensure they play to his strengths to score the goals needed, it will come of course as the team continues to develop.

Aaron Lennon is back training and he will get his chance again soon, Andros Townsend will still have plenty of opportunities to impress this season but will possibly have to occasionally come on from the bench and frighten tiring fullbacks with his pace and aggression, AVB will also be working to maximise the ability of Townsend and add more to his game.

It is fair to say that Tottenham supporters have been very impressed with Lamela from his brief forays in the team, his touch and awareness is amazing and he sees a pass and glides into dangerous positions, all we now want to see is him score that first goal for the club and more regular outings in the team.

West ham home game would be the best opportunity and townsend needn’t worry cause we have enough cup games for his progress n also he provide spark with his pace in dying moments of league games

  2. lou says:

Lamela looks to be a very exciting player a real thoroughbred. everything he does looks effortless and cannot wait to see him get a decent run. still only 21 so needs a certain amount of looking after but he’s a big strong lad who seems to take it all in his stride.
