Jan Vertonghen the Rolls Royce of defenders.

Posted on September 20, 2013 by Tony

It really doesn’t matter which position that you ask Jan Vertonghen to take up he always delivers. Following the unfortunate injury to Danny Rose so early into the game it was a simple decision to send Jan Vertonghen into the action, statistically Vertonghen has been the Tottenham player of the season so far, he has a mightily impressive pass accuracy of 94% in his 4 league games and surprisingly for a defender has yet to concede a free kick.

Super Jan excels in the air and on the ground, he has the skill of a decent midfielder and no obvious weakness, he does lack blinding pace but more than makes up for that deficiency with the ability to read the game. While he is an exceptional left back, a position he occupies most of the time for his country, his preference and his best position is certainly centre back and it seems that Michael Dawson is thriving playing alongside him.

Vlad Chiriches seems to be a player with similar characteristics to Vertonghen, both are comfortable on the ball and both love to get forward in support of and to start attacks,

he could not wish for a better role model, perhaps there might be occasion when both operate together in central defence or, sooner than you might think ,in the left back and left central defender roles together.

So far this season, in the seven games played, the team have conceded just a single goal and that in what was a difficult away fixture to Arsenal, there have been moments of pressure but they have not buckled and have coped admirably, Jan Vertonghen is a wonderful defender in his own right but he now has some equally impressive performers alongside and ahead of him in midfield, behind him as the last line of defence is there anybody better than Hugo Lloris? At a cost of only £10m, or thereabouts, a little over a year ago Tottenham acquired a Rolls Royce of a defender, it is doubtful that there is another significantly better for such a small price, let’s not forget PSG have paid over £60m for their central defensive partnership of Silva and Marquinhos.

Vertonghen is generally valued by experts at £20m plus, such has been his impact at Tottenham, but he is definitely a player that the club should secure in the longterm, he is apparently already close to being one of the club’s top end earners and has a further three years remaining on his contract with a two year option for either party, taking up that option will be a no brainer for Tottenham at some stage in the future.

Nobody can ever replace Ledley King who was a special player for Tottenham and quite possibly, when fit, the best defender in the world, he had it all and pace to burn, Tottenham needed somebody to step in to that huge void that he left behind when he retired, Jan Vertonghen was that player and a fitting replacement for the great man.

I see him as The future spurs captain if Daws doesn’t get enough playing time..

I just think that Spurs have a bunch of captains now, lots of players willing to take responsibility to drive the team on, Kaboul has done it, vertonghen, dawson,Lloris and chiriches for their country, Sandro and the other 3 central midfielders play like captains. Spurs have a team full of leaders. the heart and drive in this team is reminiscent of many of the great teams of the past and once they get their hands on that first trophy they could go on to dominate for many years.
