Key battle-Andros Townsend v Ashley Cole

Posted on September 28, 2013 by Eddie S

With quality all over the pitch the decisive moments of today’s game will probably revolve around uneven match ups and one of those could be Andros Townsend against Ashley Cole, the young pretender v experienced pro. Over the years much of Tottenham’s limited success in this fixture has stemmed from any advantage that Aaron Lennon managed to gain from the right against Cole, pace and tricky play has often caused Cole problems and Lennon has always tended to do well, even finding time to score the winning goal on one particular occasion.

It is extremely likely that the form of Townsend will ensure that he starts today’s fixture and if he does he will give it a go, one thing Townsend is not short of is confidence in his ability. With the ball at his feet there is little difference in pace between him and Lennon and Cole will have to be at his sharpest to cope with him, Townsend is a real handful if he gets his tail up and is capable of causing the Chelsea fullback all sorts of problems as he is quick, strong and has a trick or two in his repertoire.

Townsend has averaged over five efforts on goal per match with a creditable accuracy percentage of 57%, unfortunately in the league he has yet to open his goal account but if he can continue at such a rate that will soon change and today might be that occasion.

He is still a raw talent and his game will continue to develop, he has that tremendous strike rate but possibly needs to mix it up a little and provide more opportunities for others and make defenders think. His mindset is such that now Gareth Bale has left  he believes that he will be the next big star and take up his mantle, he has the ability but only time will tell whether he has the instinctiveness that great players possess.

If chosen today Andros Townsend is our choice to to make a crucial contribution.

God that match was stressful to watch. A fair result in the end.

Townsend was again fantastic today. I’m never one to play couch-coach, but I simply can’t understand the decision to take Andros off today. Perhaps it was an injury or a precaution but I felt Spurs looked far less offensive after he was replaced.

Well done to the lads for the 1-1

He is a handful but can understand that they needed to change things, Eriksen orchestrated so much in first half but didn’t get much in to him 2nd half.Dembele was probably the star for me, if only he would shoot.

  2. tom says:

was a little surprised that Lamela was not his replacement if there had to be one, maybe would have put chadli on left and Sigi central was Eriksen was starved of the ball. Still a decent and fair result.

  3. Eric says:

Couldn’t agree more.Precaution since we can’t play a man down against Chelsea.Folks asking wheres lamela, understand he’s new n we just can’t throw him in such a high intensity match. Also chadli helped Walker with defensive duties.13 points so far,I would have taken that.We need to win away n home to non title contender teams n we will be up there.I have a good feeling about this season
