Posted on September 23, 2013 by Tony

Over the summer Lewis Holtby was chosen as the captain of the German U21 team which took part in the European Championships, during the tournament he picked up an injury which severely disrupted his preseason and he was only recently able to return to the action. During the transfer window Tottenham brought in a number of high profile midfielders including another playmaker in the form of Christian Eriksen who has had an immediate impact, as a result of all these new additions there was doubt over the future of Lewis Holtby. In his short time in North London he has become a real fans favourite due to his enthusiasm and all action style, but there were rumours that a number of clubs were hoping to pick him up on loan, others have suggested that he will become a target for a few clubs in January. The player himself has said that he is up for the Tottenham challenge and is happy to battle for time on the pitch in what is an exciting talented Tottenham squad.

Norwich in his first appearance of the season and had a steady introduction, on Thursday he started against Tromso and made an assist for the second goal and also created three other opportunites, he did start to tire after an hour or so and was eventually withdrawn with the game wrapped up. Yesterday he entered the fray in the 88th minute and with the scores level, in that two minutes and the four minutes of extra time he made nine key passes to create nine chances including the winning goal.

Such is the strength of this Tottenham squad that apart from just a few key players, like Lloris for example, AVB will have the opportunity to rotate and rest players on a regular basis knowing that he has the likes of  Holtby available to start or come on from the bench to influence proceeding.

Where once we supporters could name the team for any league fixture that is likely to change this season as the players integrate more and become fully aware of the demands of the coach, Lewis Holtby is certainly a player that brings something different to the party because he is talented, aggressive and plays with the right attitude no matter what is asked of him.

He will surely have another opportunity to impress on Tuesday in the cup game against Villa, as he continues his comeback from injury and achieves match fitness much more can be expected of him.

  2. I hope he’s given a lot of game time this season. He was a beast at Schalke but we haven’t seen much of him over here yet.

In a squad lacking some cover last season he was asked to stand in left, right and centre, literally, a little difficult to show what you can do in those circumstances.
