Mark Lawrenson to Tottenham’s rescue!

Posted on November 25, 2013 by Eddie S

While all around us are losing their minds and calling for the immediate sacking of AVB, a complete overhaul in playing staff and the seasch for a sugar daddy owner some calm and realism to the whole sorry saga has come from the unlikely source of Mark Lawrenson. Commenting in the Daily Mirror he had this to say

Mark Lawrenson has played down Manchester City‘s thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur as just another “freak result” in the Premier League”

He pointed out the fact that just a few short weeks earlier the current champions of England were destroyed at the Etihad and were four goals behind by halftime. There is little doubt that this is a strange season in terms of results with only Arsenal immune from criticism, Take a look at the table at the same time last season and you will see a freescoring Tottenham were in a similar position but three points worse off, they were also ten points off second place rather than four and eleven points behind City rather than two. Perhaps we should be looking at the bigger picture rather than bemoan the lack of scoring goals and playing the Tottenham way with style and goals galore, which incidentally has resulted in winning just two League Cups in twenty years and a few preseason tournaments.

1 Manchester City 12 8 4 0 25 10 6 1 0 18 5 2 3 0 7 5 +15 28
2 Manchester United 12 9 0 3 29 17 4 0 1 15 8 5 0 2 14 9 +12 27
3 Chelsea 12 7 3 2 24 13 4 1 1 14 7 3 2 1 10 6 +11 24
4 West Bromwich Albion 12 7 2 3 19 13 6 0 1 14 5 1 2 2 5 8 +6 23
5 Everton 12 5 5 2 22 16 3 2 0 10 6 2 3 2 12 10 +6 20
6 Arsenal 12 5 4 3 23 13 3 2 1 16 8 2 2 2 7 5 +10 19
7 West Ham United 11 5 3 3 14 11 3 2 1 10 5 2 1 2 4 6 +3 18
8 Tottenham Hotspur 12 5 2 5 20 21 2 2 2 8 8 3 0 3 12 13 -1 17

Lawrenson also went on to suggest the result changes nothing and implies that it should simply be written off as another one of the fluke results we have been used to seeing this season.

” Lawrenson told The Mirror. “But Manchester City’s devastating win over Tottenham is not the disaster for the north Londoners that it appears at first glance.

“For me it is yet another freak result in a season shaping up to be the craziest in Premier League history. It is a result that is symptomatic of the fact that this year’s title will be decided by inconsistency rather than footballing brilliance.”

There were a number of problems yesterday in terms of team selection, although we are not privy to injury issues, once the second goal went in the fight disappeared and none of the substitutions were able to alter the direction of the game. With a squad containing players like Capoue, Townsend and Dembele all prepared to battle and try to take the game to the opposition AVB might have been better served to set his team up to get a result of some description first and foremost, had the game ended 0-0 he would still have been under the cosh because of the teams lack of goals but yesterdays pasting heaps far more pressure on him and his players.

The sign of a good team is how they react to adversity and with Manchester United next up Tottenham have the chance to put the wrongs of recent weeks behind them quickly. Thinking about yesterdays result and how this season has gone so far surely it was simply a blip, superb finishing finishing from City and the shock of that first shocking goal and mistakes from some unlikely sources., this season has been all about strong defensive performances, six goals conceded in eleven games to six in a single game must surely be a one off.

+Tottenham travel to Tromso on Thursday in a dead rubber having already one the group and i would hope that AVB and the team are concentrating their efforts on Sunday and United and to hell with the result of Thursday. Send the kids and those needing game time to face Tromso and simply rest and prepare the squad for Sunday. Now that the international breaks are over hopefully we can expect some improvement in terms of team play and cohesion all more important to teams like Tottenham who brought in so many new players over the summer.
