New Year Premiership predictions

Posted on January 01, 2014 by Eddie S

Firstly all at JTN wish our readers, players, supporters and contributors a very Happy and Prosperous New Year and let’s hope come the end of the season the success we crave.

The first set of fixtures of the New Year as the battle at the top and bottom of the Premiership intensifies.During December results started to go to form and there were fewer surprises, looking at the following set of fixtures I really don’t see many shocks as the big teams with the depth of squad at their disposal always seem to take advantage at this time of year, when the fixtures come thick and fast the likes of City and Chelsea with massive squads of great quality will have been able to rest and rotate players without too much of a drop in form. they will have a distinct advantage over teams that have had to put out identical teams in quick succession. Let’s see what we might expect from today’s games;

Wed 1 Jan 2014 – Premier League

  • Swansea v Man City 12:45
  • The home team are always likely to put up a good performance as possession is their strong point, unfortunately it is questionable whether they have the firepower to make it count. City are in the midst of a good run of form and more importantly consistency, Few teams can resist their attacking prowess and that suggests to me an Away win 2-0.premier league
  • Arsenal v Cardiff 15:00
  • The current leaders have been pegged back having been unable to make much impression against those ahead of them in the betting for the title, it seems that they can comfortably see off the lesser teams and Cardiff currently fall into that category, in fact it is likely that Cardiff will soon find themselves in serious trouble and fighting for survival after the internal turmoil they have encountered. Home win 3-0
  • Crystal Palace v Norwich 15:00
  • Two teams in the proverbial meet after recent encounters against the two Manchester clubs which both were perhaps unlucky to lose by a single goal. Both will be looking to bounce back with Palace having the incentive of moving ahead of Norwich with a win. This is one of those difficult ones to call and so I will go for a 1-1 Draw.
  • Fulham v West Ham 15:00
  • A must win game for two teams in the relegation zone. Fulham seemingly unable to defend and West Ham lacking a strike force at the moment. A win for either team will almost certainly ensure they escape the the bottom three which could have a significant impact on them for the remainder of the season, will either of them do it? my guess is that Fulham will make home advantage count. home win 2-1.
  • Liverpool v Hull 15:00
  • Freescoring Liverpool versus freescoring Hull, that has got to be a first. At home Liverpool have been impressive and after two disappointing results, if not performances, against City and Chelsea they will want to get back to winning ways and quickly. Hull will be buoyed by an impressive 6-0 win against Fulham and will make a good game of it but I’m still taking liverpool to get their challenge back on track. home win 3-1.
  • Southampton v Chelsea 15:00
  • It’s hard to know what Southampton will produce at the moment, they are a team with an abundance of talent and they are always a difficult team to face. Chelsea are a difficult to beat and while not pretty to watch surprisingly still manage to find a way to get the result they need. If Southampton can rediscover their early season form and regain their defensive quality they have the players to make life difficult for Chelsea and for that reason we could see the spoils shared. !-1 Draw.
  • Stoke v Everton 15:00
  • But for that surprise home defeat to Sunderland fourth placed Everton might have been even higher in the table, stoke on the other hand are in the midst of a poor run of results and decisions if we are all honest. I can really only see one winner on this occasion as Everton possess too much power for a depleted Stoke team. Away win 2-1.
  • Sunderland v Aston Villa 15:00
  • Sunderland are playing with great enterprise at the moment and have that never say die attitude needed if they are to climb away from the bottom of the table. After a great win at Everton and comeback against Cardiff they will be pumped up and ready for a Villa team falling further down the table and likely to face another fight for survival unless their forwards start to fire soon. It’s Sunderland for me as they look to climb off the bottom. Home win 2-0.
  • West Brom v Newcastle 15:00
  • After a couple of battling performances away to Tottenham and West Ham both resulting in commendable draws, WBA return to the Hawthorns to face high flying Newcastle. Alan Pardew’s team put up a good show against Arsenal in their last outing going down to a single goal, had they been more adventurous that result might easily have been reversed. This will be a good battle. Draw 2-2.
  • Man Utd v Tottenham 17:30
  • United on a run of six great results are up against an undefeated Tim Sherwood team in three league fixtures and both teams are desperate to win this one and maintain momentum. Both teams have underperformed so far this season and are only separated by goal difference so a win for either club will mean much to their ambition for the remainder of the season. Tottenham managed to pull off a shock last year for the first time in decades but I fear things will return to normal on this occasion. Home win 3-1.premier league
