Performance-good, Result-good, whats not to like?

Posted on August 29, 2014 by Eddie S

With nine changes to the team that routed QPR it was only to be expected that it would take a while for the team to gel but eventually it did. The second half performance was completely dominating and impressive despite the game having effectively been over with Harry Kane effort in the first half. What was so impressive was the pressing and chasing down of the opposition, it was like a white swarm at times, if the opposition got on the front foot the speed with which they were closed down and Tottenham players got goal side was amazing and they kept it up until the final whistle.

I won’t call this the second team as of course it isn’t, some of the players on show last night will in due course play in the team for league fixtures, most of last nights performers are still lacking fitness and game time but there were a few who showed that they are getting closer to form. Moussa Dembele somehow attracts a bit of adverse opinion in some quarters which stuns me, he is a quality performer who will eventually again be one of the first names on the team sheet.

It was good to see Vlad Chiriches on the field of play again as most thought we had seen the last of him, a slow start but grew into it and might yet be the understudy for Jan Vertonghen. Kaboul got another 90 minutes under his belt and still no sign of those injury problems.

Harry Kane had a fine game and led the line well, he is one big lump yet has some fantastic technical ability, there is still some criticism of him but he is still only 20 yrs old and is well on the way to becoming one of the best homegrown strikers we have ever produced.

Ben Davies was impressive and is starting to grow into the role required of him while Paulinho has started his rehabilitation, mark my words he will score plenty of goals for Tottenham.

On the day the performance was good and actually improved as the game wore on but probably should have brought more goals, I can’t help feeling that had Soldado been fit to start he might well have filled his boots and taken home the match ball.

Mauricio Pochettino probably can’t believe his luck with the squad he has taken over, the depth and quality within this group when the players are moulded into a cohesive unit is impressive, he has repeatedly said that he has an unbeleivable squad yet so far despite buying five new players he hasn’t spent a penny of the transfer fund available to him.

Tottenham are in a great place at the moment but leading up to the Liverpool game our supporters have to understand that it is still very early days, we might or might not get the result we want on Sunday but must not judge the coach and team based on what happens, let’s be honest any improvement on a 5-0 defeat is better than last season.

Good analysis. Again pleasing stuff, we worked hard and good to see players getting a good run out. We really do have a good squad, although still needs a bit of balance. Not getting carried away. Big test on Sunday, but again far too early to make any real judgement. Yes, I am happy!

me too, our new coach certainly seems to have the magic touch, players seem to play at their best for him. as you say early days, there will be setbacks and how we react will be the test. so far so good.
