Player and supporter review Tottenham v Hull.

Posted on October 31, 2013 by Scraggs

Compliments to Hull for a gutsy excellent performance that helped make for an enthralling game, for Tottenham this was their first penalty shoot out win in nineteen years of trying and results in the opportunity to extract some revenge over West Ham for that league defeat a few weeks back.

For the Tottenham supporters this was their opportunity to show AVB and the players that they wish to be a big part of the project that Tottenham are building towards and they took it, the atmosphere was decidedly improved upon, the noise levels were raised, there was humour and they drove the team on all evening, especially following the shock of falling behind in extra time. The reaction on Twitter was interesting and the consensus of opinion was that the vast majority of supporters were actually excited by the drama of the entire evening, most came away buzzing having thoroughly enjoyed participating in far better atmosphere generated by the much improved vocal support. As things turned out AVB has managed to pull off another master stroke and endeared himself and his players even more to the fans. AVB complimented the support and so he should because they reacted in just the right way when Hull took the lead in extra time and drove the team on.

“It was a great, entertaining game and the supporters were absolutely fantastic,” said Villas-Boas.

“To see their response after we suffered a setback was very pleasant, they can make that difference for us. It was a great atmosphere and it was great for the team to feel that empathy with the supporters.”

“We’ve seen some brilliant, brilliant football tonight. If you want to see predictable endings or happy endings you go to the opera or the theatre. In football you don’t know what is going to happen.

“I couldn’t be happier.”

On the field of play there were a few plus points most notably the performances of Erik Lamela and Harry Kane as well as the return of Younes Kaboul who at last managed to see out an entire game and scored from the spot. Kane came on for the unfortunate Chadli who was forced to go off injured just nine minutes after replacing the injured Kyle Naughton and in a relatively short space of time managed to show what he could do, he almost won the game in the last seconds of  normal time with a tremendous strike from distance which rattled the post while his equalising goal was also very impressive.

Erik Lamela was perhaps unfortunate  to have his spot kick saved and that might have eventually contributed towards a defeat had it not been for the efforts of the remaining penalty takers and Brad Friedel, luckily the result went the way of Tottenham and we can all breath a sigh of relief. The bigger picture for Lamela was actually one of a player starting to come to grips with the Premier League, he put in a very decent performance and was a constant threat, he seemed to pop up all over the pitch probing for openings and the support is still very much with him. Lamela looks to be a player who will be transformed once he pops in his first goal for the club, last night he began to show a little more of what he is all about. When the likes of Townsend, Tom Carroll and Pritchard were being loaned out to gain experience Lamela was playing and performing at the highest level in Italy, not only that but he was scoring fantastic goals for fun and setting up his teammates, he is still of an age where he is not even registered in Tottenham;s squad of twenty-five players, along with Eriksen and Kane.

It would be ridiculous not to report on last nights game without mentioning the quality of the goal scored by Gylfi Sigurdsson, everything about it was of the highest quality and the Hull keeper stood no chance, after that the only disappointment was that the team did not go on to finish the tie but as said before this Hull team led by Steve Bruce are made of stern stuff and battled their way back, not since the first half against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the opening day have they been found wanting and they showed their mettle again.

Some might see the current Tottenham style as a negative but it certainly is effective as the results just keep on coming, you have to admire the control and will of the players to continue retaining possession and trying to create real chances rather than the gung-ho approach and chucking crosses into the box from every angle and area of the pitch, did any of us really enjoy plan B under Harry Redknapp which was to bring on Crouch and aim balls at him hoping for a break or perhaps Super Pav, “get on there and just run around”. AVB and these players have far more substance and a method and in the main it is working, more importantly over time it will just get better and better as the players learn to react off the cuff to others around them. 67% possession over the 120 minutes is impressive in anybodies language and that is typical of this Tottenham team under AVB and is reminiscent of the best teams in Europe.

So now it is on to the quarters of the Capital One Cup and another home game against West Ham, this time around I would take a bet that they will have to cope with the £26m man Roberto Soldado and or Emanuel Adebayor who will surely get his chance to shine soon as the goals and form of JD seems to be suffering at the moment.

Back to the bread and butter of the league this weekend and a difficult away encounter with high flying Everton, AVB will know that a good result there will result in closing the gap on one or more of the three teams above them as Arsenal face Liverpool and chelsea have a tough away trip to Newcastle.

that is when you need true support when your up against it not when your 4 or 5 up, more importantly all the supporters who were there seemed to really enjoy the entire occasion. Now that support must be continued throughout the season.
