Possible delay in Vertonghen and Kaboul combo.

Posted on July 26, 2013 by Guest Writer

So the battle is on for Jan Vertonghen  to regain fitness for the start of the season and to take his place in the lineup alongside Younes Kaboul, an unfortunate slip in poor conditions in Hong Kong has possibly once again delayed what we all hope will be a wonderful defensive partnership.

Last season Kaboul was the recipient of an injury soon into the first game of the season and he did not reappear again, it has taken him almost a year but he is now back, the information being provided is that the ankle injury might possibly keep Vertonghen away for three to four weeks so with 22 days remaining before the season opener, make that 23 days because of the Sunday kick off, it could still happen if he is a quick healer and the medical staff can do their stuff.

Presumably if Vertonghen fails to recover in time his natural replacement will be Steven Caulker, a player who did remarkably well last season and was involved in many of the really big games including the away fixture at United. In many respects Younes Kaboul and Caulker should also complement one another as both are extremely quick over the ground and happy to play the ball out from the back.

With four fully fledged Internationals to call upon AVB will be spoilt for choice this season, any pairing should be a powerful combination particular with the midfield protection expected to start ahead of them.

So as the team as whole begins to take shape there is only the situation surrounding who will win the battle for the left back spot left to decide, AVB has confirmed that Danny Rose is going nowhere so he will expect games, Benni, rumoured to be on his way to Turkey is obviously still being counted upon and hopefully with a good level of fitness he will regain his form.

Not long now before the season starts but with the hope that perhaps another player or two will be brought in excitement really is starting to build.

I would take Daws over Caulker as a replacement for vertonghen though.. He’s a no nonsense old school centre back and should complement Kaboul much more than caulker..

problem is that Dawson and Kaboul both prefer the right sided defensive position while Vertonghen and Caulker prefer the left.
