Premier League Predictions round 16 (Saturday)

Posted on December 14, 2013 by Scraggs

This week AVB has decided to rest Eddie S, having persevered with him since early in the season results have not gone in his favour, there has been talk of loaning him out in the transfer window so that he might try to regain the ability to predict (he didn’t see that coming) Maybe a trip to Italy or Spain might help him to learn English and settle in north London. Only joking of course as Eddie will return next week to try to make sense of the fixtures this season.

  • Man City v Arsenal 12:45
  • This is obviously the fixture of the weekend as the title favourites take on the title leaders. City have been supreme at home this season and have swept all before them while Arsenal have been most un-Arsenal in that they have been impressive defensively and that has allowed their creative players to prosper. Today will see the the Arsenal back line and midfield tested unlike in any previous game while City will have to contend with a team that possesses some superb attacking players capable of counterattacking at speed. Cannot see much in this in all honesty but will take City just. Home win 2-1.
  • Cardiff v West Brom 15:00
  • This is a battle between two teams that have had some decent results at the big clubs but have let themselves down when they might have expected to press on. both teams are in desperate need of points and for that reason I think that they will both earn one. Draw 1-1
  • Chelsea v Crystal Palace 15:00
  • A few weeks ago you might have feared for Palace coming into a fixture like this, their defence was at sixes and sevens and they couldn’t buy a goal but of late and with the help of Tony Pulis and his caretaker predecessor they have steadied the ship and are on the cusp of exiting the relegation spots. Chelsea have yet to hit the heights this season and there must be some serious doubts as to whether they actually can, their strikers are fluffing their lines and between the three of Torres, Eto’o and Ba they have managed just four Premiership goals, the same number as Roberto Soldado in his first season in the league. Chelsea will surely turn up for this one though. Home win 2-0.
  • Everton v Fulham 15:00
  • Both teams have performed superbly in their last two outings with Everton beating United and then totally outplaying Arsenal at the Emirates to earn a draw, Fulham on the other hand did well against Tottenham before losing to two wonder goals but managed a win at last at the weekend. With home advantage after two difficult away games this will be a decent game for the “Toffees” to show their own fans what they can do. Home win 3-1.
  • Newcastle v Southampton 15:00
  • Two teams currently going in opposite directions, Southampton were flying high and threatening to worry the top clubs while Newcastle seemed set to face a relegation battle, just half a dozen games later and the teams have swapped positions in the table and Newcastle will go into the game as favourites. Southampton have not actually become a bad side overnight as their draw with City showed, this could begin their comeback. Draw 1-1.
  • West Ham v Sunderland 15:00
  • Two teams bang in trouble and desperate for points, by the end of the game it is feasible that both could find themselves in the relegation places in the league. Occasional West Ham find a way to unpick defences but not often enough while they wait on their huge signing Andy Carroll returning to action. Sunderland are beginning to find themselves detached at the foot of the table and need some points and quick if they are to halt the rot. Home win 2-1.
  • Hull v Stoke 17:30
  • I have to say that Hull have become one of my favourite teams this season, mainly because of the Huddlestone and Livermore midfield axis but also because their supporters have taken up the challenge to prevent their name change to Hull Tigers. Stoke continue to blow hot and cold and the two clubs are only separated by a single point. This will be a tough encounter and for that reason I’m taking a point apiece. Draw 1-1 .

Wonderful scenes at The Etihad … –
    Wojciech Szczesny

    • Tony says:

Welcome back Eric, what a wonderful sight. The joy of six.

    • Boobaspur says:

It really is poetic justice for that clown – who had been given the dubious title of “Plank of the Week” on TalkSport for his gloating.

Oh how I prayed as I watched – “please make it 6, please make it 6” – just to shove it down that idiots neck.

      • Caleb says:

I think this just showed the gap between arsenal and spurs at the moment. The defences are on a par, and controlling the ball is very similar, but arsenal have a way of scoring goals. It was an amazing game and in all honesty could have finished 8-8 or 8-5 any scoreline could have happened but we put up a fight until the last 20 when flamini came off. This premier league season really is special, it will be interesting to see how it ends up

        • Tony says:

This season anything could happen. City have been incredible at times but away form makes no sense. I said before that defensive midfield defence and cover for giroud were areas of concern for arsenal and it might be coming home to roost. Creating goals with the group you have will never be a problem but stopping them and being overpowered in midfield has got to be an issue. How big a loss will kosielny be? We have the strength but nedd to find creativity and you are the opposite.

          • Caleb says:

Fortunately koscielny only suffered a deep cut and will not be out for long at all. But in all fairness vermaelen is a capable replacement, although yesterday makes it seem as though he isn’t, the goals conceded weren’t his fault. I think we are okay in defensive mid as long as wenger plays flamini instead of arteta. It was clear how important he is to us after he was taken off with 20 left to play and then we got trampled on. We definitely need a striker, a clinical finisher like heavier Hernandez or Defoe, giroud is good at holding up the ball and playing nice flick through balls but in a one on one he is not clinical. Hopefully podolski can fill that leading up to January. Tricky game for spurs today, but if I were you just surround Suarez, if he doesn’t score Liverpool won’t. Could batter them considering no gerrard or Sturridge.

          • Tony says:

giroud and ramsay have stepped up for you and been impressive but along with Flamini are hugely important to you. We spurs supporters know only too well how picking the same players comes back to kick you in the teeth, for past 3 seasons we have dropped away last few months which cost us and you might be facing the same problem unless you spend in january. There is a reason Vermaelen has lost his spot and unless he regains the form of a couple of seasons back he will be a problem, with the WC coming up though he will be busting a gut to do so.
first goal today is vital and if we get it I can see us rolling over them, but Suarez is a bit special and will cause problems.

      • Tony says:

I love it when a plan comes together.

      • steve says:

You couldnt make it up really . Their seaon is already beginning to unravel and some are looking knackered already. Xmas schedule is going to be a major period for them now. They need to cling on at top or can see them slipping away.

        • Caleb says:

A slight overstatement in my opinion, we got battered by city fair enough but like when spurs did the result of losing isn’t too bad it was just the margin of the loss. We lost to Napoli in a game we could afford to. We have 9 days rest before Chelsea so I can’t see tiredness being an issue and I can see us beating them next week. Big game today for spurs and Liverpool, prediction I’m going for a draw 2-2

  2. Caleb says:

What wilshere did was disgraceful and he really shouldn’t be doing his he ought to be suspended for 3 games. May actually do him some good he is in poor form and only gets in because he’s young, English and a future star. I also think Szscesny shouldn’t be commenting on other games on social media sights unless it is with praise.

On another note spurs really need a player who will take a game like this and turn it around but they just don’t seem to have it. Even when spurs did lose 6-0 they were still going at city and probably didn’t deserve a 6-0 loss. This first half display deserves to be a 6-0, gutless so far.
