Rare penalty and even more rare opening day win for Tottenham.

Posted on August 19, 2013 by Scraggs

Not since May 2012 against Villa towards the end of the 2011/12 season have Tottenham been awarded a penalty, that was scored by Adebayor and brought to an end a run of penalties with a poor conversion rate. since Roberto Soldado has joined the club a penalty has been awarded in both fixtures in which he has been involved and he has put both away with clinical precision.

Statistics show that Tottenham rarely win their opening day fixture, in fact they are more likely to lose than win or draw combined. On one of the few occasions Tottenham started their season with a win, in fact the last time, they went on to qualify for the Champions League. That year they started with a home win over Liverpool, the team that they ultimately replaced in the top four and actually went on a very decent run.

Once upon a time a Tottenham away victory of any type was a rare event, even more so with a clean sheet, since AVB has been involved that type of result is becoming more routine. Yesterdays victory over Palace was no classic and remained a little uncomfortable until the last minute, had any one of four or five good chances been taken then the result would have been a foregone conclusion much earlier, it was not to be but looking at the game overall a difficult away fixture was in the end rather comfortable, Tottenham played well within themselves and were rarely troubled, they would have liked a couple more goals but three points was still the end result.

Tottenham started their first game of the season with four new faces in their ranks if you include Danny Rose who has only just returned from a year with Sunderland, Capoue made his debut with thirty minutes remaining and did very well, he proved that he will be a massive asset over the course of this season. With Kaboul, Sandro and possibly even Bale and Adebayor still to make their mark things are looking good for Tottenham, just take a look at the bench on Sunday with Friedel, Defoe, Kaboul, Capoue, Townsend, Carroll and Naughton, with three of the four mentioned above and Holtby and Benni to be added to the list there can be no doubt that AVB has one of the strongest squads in the Premiership available to him.

There are still a couple of issues to be resolved before the transfer windows closes and there will almost certainly be more ins and outs, clearly the aim is to be stronger than ever before, not easy if Gareth Bale leaves but if he does it will be exciting to see just who joins to replace him with such an enormous sum of money to work with.
