Sherwood backs Soldado to kick on but will drop him for next game!

Posted on March 03, 2014 by Scraggs

Yesterday Roberto Soldado scored a superb strikers goal to take all three points in the fixture against Cardiff, the relief when he scored was incredibly obvious as he held his head in his hands thankful that his personal hell was finally over. It had been his first goal in nine frustrating games but he took his chance superbly and showed just what he is capable of. to be fair to the tottenham support they have rarely wavered in their support of the spanish striker and they were just as pleased as him and all the players who all rallied around him to enjoy his moment, adebayor being the leader of the moment calling the players around, a nice touch from a player considered to be extremely self centered.

After the game Tim Sherwood sent out a challenge to Soldado to kick on from this point and get the twenty goals that he has become accustomed to each season in Spain, a job for which Tottenham paid a record sum to do for them. With eleven goals already, some penalties and some in Europe there is every chance that Soldado can achieve that target though the problem might actually be getting  the opportunity to play enough games and so maintain form.

Soldado has been threatening to start grabbing goals in recent games and has put in some effective all action performances, he has some tricks and a bit of pace about him, he also has that edge to his game that he will need to do well in the future in the EPL. Unfortunately Tottenham now face a run of games that starts with Chelsea next weekend and then includes Liverpool and Arsenal. If Tim Sherwood has learned nothing else in his short time in the job it is surely the fact that against each of those three teams he will need to play an extra man in midfield with one of them being a specialist midfield enforcer, with Capoue injured that job falls to “The Beast”, Sandro who is and always has been our best in the position and he ┬áhas regained fitness at just the right moment.

Based upon current goalscoring form there can only be one person to lead the line if fit and Adebayor will take his place in the team leaving Soldado on the bench ready to step up if needed. Other than for these particularly difficult encounters there are other games when soldado will start including in Europe against Benfica where a good haul of goals and quality performances might change Sherwood’s thinking.

While it’s wins that we really want to put pressure on those above us that we have to face it is also important that we do not lose those fixtures also as provided the gap does not grow there will always be a chance, though remote, that the pressure might get to one or two of them.

So it’s on to Chelsea next week in what might be a defining moment in the season both for the teams hopes of a top four finish and the hopes of sherwood to retain the job long term.
